where will one be able to go?
It might depend on how one would look at that question. For one, galaxies are part of a cosmic web. Recently, astronomers discovered a colossal cosmic structure known as the Big Ring, which challenges existing theories of the universe. That massive structure has a diameter of about 1.3 billion light-years.Yes. It's a solar system, not a planetary system. The planets are akin to chunky parts of the Sun's body odour. While the solar system is part of a galaxy, impacts on the solar system from the outside tend to be episodic and rare.
Sure, not all parts off the Earth (or most things) are the same. Some are more sentient than others. Entities with ostensibly only is-ness evolved sentience. It's presumed that sentience can aid in survival, although there are varying opinions here. While I would agree, I would again seek to question the apparent notion of inherentness of 'is-ness' involved. When it concerns an animal, there is an interest involved that spans beyond that 'is-ness' in my opinion, making it differ from a human gadget that would share a presence on Earth. The fact is that humans and their tech are as much a part of the planet as lizards, rocks, birds, mountains and oceans.
However, exponential growth may simply result in AI becoming a more powerful tool but not sentience. That may be preferable to the alternative.Exponential growth in AI development might mean that it would take just a few years to be witness of the most profound developments. Ideas can be crafted in perhaps less than time since it concerns imaginative foresight. Some argue that the origin of ideas, such as scientific breakthroughs, is a cosmic or universal mind. AI might enable to unlock the potential of ideas in a new way, enabling humans to excel in idea based evolution. It depends. Ultimately, the intelligence will be both - human smarts augmented by machines that essentially magnify those smarts. It will be super interesting to see how far "independent" AI can go in terms of sentience, but the most exciting developments there will probably happen after I have departed to join the choir invisible.

Alas, Fermi still applies. Still, if Earthlings ever meet alien intelligences, chances are it will be a meeting of two AIs. Biology and outer space are not very compatible. The "just is" in your argument is not "all-inclusive" in my opinion and the philosophical case for relevancy of aspects 'beyond existence' should be factored in, which would imply in my opinion, that one is obligated to look beyond the Earth for certain questions related to consciousness and existence, which would be the case when it concerns the question whether artificial intelligence as opposed to organic intelligence is inherently different.

Does the medium make the difference? I noticed in articles from scientists who explored that specific question, as well as in the book Reality+ by David Chalmers, that it cannot be answered why organic matter would be more suitable for life and intelligence than for example silicon. (Chalmers uses that as an argument, but I would disagree that it would provide an argumentative basis).

My apologies for the late reply. It took me several months to return to this topic ;)Yes, it's just a lingual convention. The planet has exuding ever more complex and sophisticated entities for billions of years. Everything is "natural", so it's more a matter of something being human-made or not. So everything is natural unless created by human decision-making, in which case something will be deemed "artificial".
IMO, if AI has any qualia, that will be a function of a panpsychic universe (if such a thing is true), where most/all entities are considered to be proto-conscious, while brained life forms are deemed fully conscious in varying degrees.
