Re: If you were formerly an atheist and now you are believer

May 4th, 2013, 4:26 pm

I'm not so sure about the exixtential angst as a complete explanation myself. It may be part of it for some people and the source of that angst is not necessarily fear of death either. It could for example be a symptom of having an unconcious part to our psyche, which feels consciously like somethin...

Re: Faking Illness To Avoid Work

April 5th, 2013, 11:08 pm

I can only speak from a personal standpoint, which is the only way to answer this question in any case, because we are all (slightly) different in upbringing and experience. Personally I am unable to phone in sick because it feels wrong and immediately I feel unsettled at the thought of it. It's lik...

Re: God(s), should human beings believe in them?

No, I mean that treating people of a group different than others is racist/sexist/ageist/etc. -- aka anti-liberalism.

Roger that. My point though was that the subsequent cohesion improves survivability of the group in an evolutionary sense. Here is Haidt's TED talk on the topic if you're interested:

@ Rombomb

"So its racist."

If in that particular group it is their race that they find sacred and which gives social cohesion to the group then I suppose in that particular instance yes. Anything can be sacred though be it god or gods, nature, politics etc.

(quote not shown) One explanation suggested by a number of people including Jonathan Haidt is that we are inclined to find the sacred in things and then form groups around the sacred thing. This common belief in the "sacred thing" acts as a social cohesion for the group and as a consequenc...

Re: Sex with drunk women

(quote not shown) I think this has been answered quite well along the way but consent as an issue is almost always at the crux of a rape allegation in my experience. The law in NZ states that a consent must be freely given with an understanding of the nature and quality of the act one is consenting ...

Re: God is Dead

Yes it certainly got the group talking after the presentation and ethics and morality was covered to some degree in the presentation and discussion, but not in the tables. The three tables I TRIED to put up here were a simple visual way of showing some interesting alignments to get things started. I...

The permitted method of format seems very limited. I can't attach a document, create a table or even type with spaces where they wouldn't be in normal text. This has been quite frustrating! Anyway I'll try and get these tables in somehow. Please imagine columns headed Fowlers Stages, Name and Descri...

God is Dead

February 26th, 2013, 4:29 pm

I attended a talk to our local Ephesus Group on Sunday, which is a group associated with the Sea of Faith. The talk was given by the Ministry Team Leader for the local Presbyterian Church, namely the Rev Dr Susan Jones. I was suprised to hear her tell the group that the God of the Bible was dead, or...

Re: Atheist "God" Claims = Silliness

January 27th, 2013, 4:50 am

@ enegue Thanks for your thoughts. I am jealous in a way that you find solidity in the scriptural definition of God and it must give you some peace that for me seems unattainable at the moment. My cynicism won't allow me to overlook the inherrant errors in scripture, which point to the hand of man, ...

Re: Atheist "God" Claims = Silliness

January 26th, 2013, 12:54 am

(quote not shown) Enegue Post 33 was indeed a good post and the liberal spiritualists mentioned in it might be a better term for those I described within a faith community who don't adhere literally to the concept of God as decscribed in the scriptures of that community. You are right about it being...

Re: Atheist "God" Claims = Silliness

January 25th, 2013, 3:05 am

Concepts of God have to be personal don't they? God being unknowable and all that means we all create our own version of God in our mind. I was brought up in my western culture, through which I view my world, whether I am atheist or theist. I try to read and learn other concepts of God and have an a...

Re: Gun Control and Mass Murder

January 3rd, 2013, 4:40 am

(quote not shown) I agree but this does demonstrate that the two positions on this topic are poles apart. One solution being offered is much tighter gun control and the abolition of military style weapons, the other solution is arm everybody with a firearm. It seems to me that the old policy of mutu...

Re: Dying for a Cause

January 2nd, 2013, 3:23 am

(quote not shown) I think that people who allow themselves to be put in harms way where death is a potential outcome do so because of relationship. That relationship with a person, people or a cause is strong enough to invoke an emotional response. In the military, the recruits are trained hard and ...

Re: What songs inspire you philosophically?

Johnny Cash with his version of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". The lyrics are simple but the song and it's delivery invoke an emotional response, which is personal to the listener….. "Hurt" I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's rea...
