Re: Have you read the bible?

November 2nd, 2011, 12:26 pm

The statement that I made above, was in reference to the fact that most serious bible readers hate metaphors. If the bible says that the world was created in seven days, then it most be so, literally seven times twenty-four hours. Jesus walking on water, was it supposed to be metaphorical or literal...

Re: Have you read the bible?

November 1st, 2011, 4:51 pm

I am currently reading and listening to Revelations in the Vulgate. What I like about Revelations is that it is obvious that it is not to be taken literally. No matter how much a person hates metaphors, Revelations forces a person to deal with them. Its a puzzle to see if you can figure it out. I am...

What exactly is "common sense"?

October 24th, 2011, 1:37 pm

I mostly see the phrase "Its common sense" as meaning " The majority of people believe this so it must be true". In my view this is is a clever way to end an argument. But is there any situation in which the phrase "Its common sense" can be used as a valid answer. Does ...

Re: What's an AD HOMINEM???

October 23rd, 2011, 3:26 pm

I am thinking of a hypothetical situation, where there is a fallacy very similar to an ad hominem, but yet it isn't an ad hominem. I would like to know the correct nomenclature for this type of fallacy. Hypothetical Situation There is an extensive philosophical argument that is published in a RPG(ro...

Re: Who determines linguistic meaning?

October 21st, 2011, 7:48 pm

It seems that many of the references here are being made of words that belong to the macro-physical world. The last post that I made above isn't really relevant until you are talking about abstract words. I have an interesting hypothesis to present, but at this point, just not relevant. Its wh...

Re: Who determines linguistic meaning?

October 19th, 2011, 10:27 pm

I am basing this answer on the Meyers-Briggs Personality Test (Please Undertand me II David Kersey), and I have the full reference for anyone interested. About 80% of the population have a problem with conceptualization and the abstract. In my humble opinion, this 80% have developed sophisticated me...

What are the principles for meme replication? For genes (digital replication) the principles of gene replication. For men first: promiscuity, and polygamy( get as many women pregnant as possible). For women: Attraction for men with resources, (find a mate with the greatest ability to raise offspring...

Re: Help me break my bad stereotype of sports fans!

October 8th, 2011, 2:04 am

Your use of the word "toleration" is of course referring to their lack of ability to discuss philosophy though right? Yeah I would agree with that. The way I see it though, an avid sports fan can visualize a motion picture, in color and high definition when he closes his eyes. He is able t...

Help me break my bad stereotype of sports fans!

October 7th, 2011, 10:31 pm

This is a reality check for me, I want get the bigger picture outside my own limited experience of the world. I would like to hear what's the deepest level of philosophical discussion that anyone here has been able to experience with an avid sports fan? Whenever I I interact with an avid sports fan,...

Re: Categories of Communication

September 28th, 2011, 12:25 pm

@Dowhat1can

"The tricks" I was referring to how to transition between the two states. When I am rational, I completely cut out the interpersonal human aspect, and vice versa. Transitioning between these two states is difficult for me, even in situations where I really need to.

Re: All drugs should be legal

September 28th, 2011, 12:12 pm

@ xris Research on how drugs and smoking damage the body is solid, and it is known by almost everyone. So here i don't think you have a case. You bring up a different point of should a criminal receive medical care, I think serious crimes should exclude one from the health care system. Where do you ...

Re: Categories of Communication

September 26th, 2011, 2:24 pm

Yeah, I can see the confusion. I am referring more to the state (location) of mind that a person is in while communicating. So, its pretty obvious that the physical body can't be in two places in the material world at once. However, the location of the mind isn't so obvious. In locating the location...

Re: All drugs should be legal

September 25th, 2011, 2:31 pm

This is a complicated topic, especially in a country of free health care. I would say that yes cigarettes and drugs should be legal, but that by using them they should be excluded from free health care. A person who smokes should take the on responsibility of any future health problems that may be in...
