Re: Does the wise man know that he is wise?

My brother was once frustrated because his boss (a very wealthy chain business owner) was in his assessment an idiot. He felt that his boss did not deserve the money; he could not fathom how he had achieved so much being so daft. I asked my brother how he does it and he replied that his boss employs many smart men to guide him. I then asked my brother “doesn’t that seem like the smartest thing a dumb person could possibly do”. To which he replied only with silence.

Sometimes the greatest wisdom is to know when one is not wise and seek the council of someone you know who is. Perhaps it is more important to be aware of what you do not know. Perhaps that is what true wisdom is.

Well I will then seek your council.

One must be wise to truly recognize wisdom; however one does not need to be wise to simply think one possesses wisdom. No doubt we have all met those beneath us in wisdom who think themselves the greater, and it follows that we think ourselves quite superior to others who are in fact our betters.

We could instead turn to the general opinion of others to discern it but that too is folly. We need to look no further than the general popularity of performers such as Justin Bieber to see this method too is sometimes lacking (no offence to anyone with Bieber fever).

We must also consider when we judge ourselves too harshly, when song of praise falls upon us deafly, when we are our harshest critic. Readily comes to mind so many women who are strikingly beautiful yet think themselves average or plain. No doubt nearly all of us know at least one.

Re: The Boundaries of Science: Can It Explain Everything?

“It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.”

Even when it comes to explaining the origins of the universe or nothingness, science appears closer to philosophy than one would think.

Philosophy can assist science in ensuring it is good science.

No, the wise man is so at peace with himself that he is not aware of that.

Interesting as I was not aware of the self until 49. What could have happen there to be so far away from the mean?

Belinda wrote:Bermudj, I mean that Humanists believe that love is human , not divine, and this belief does not cause Humanists to revere love any the less for its being human.

Christians by comparison tend to believe that all human love is caused by a supernatural God, and that this supernatural God became a man so that he could show humans the way to love.

BTW I spell Humanist in this context with a capital letter because Humanists belong to a modern movement called Humanism. When humanism is spelled with a small 'h' it usually refers to what happened about five hundred years ago when people began to think that humans in mind and body were quite okay, really, without any reference to God.

Thanks

Belinda wrote:Bermudj, one of the definitions in the dictionary that you quoted is that necessity is the state of being unavoidable. This is the definition I refer to.

To apply this idea to God is to say that the God idea is deterministic. The orthodox Christian notion that prevails today as far as I know is that God, as necessity, has benevolence built into necessity. I am not happy about this which is the main reason I am a Humanist not a Christian.

Thanks, and what are the main traits of a Humanist?
