Re: Can Human Knowledge comprehend "How It All Started"?

January 24th, 2013, 11:11 pm

And I thought this was either a epistemological or metaphysical thread - silly me.

Beyondthecave, You say "Yes", but I don't follow how your reasoning matches the question. For example, you say "The thinker/actor is an object that appears to consciousness". Appearing is activity, a changing occurring to consciousness when before there was no thinker/agent and n...

Re: There is no 'a priori' knowledge of the real world.

January 24th, 2013, 10:54 pm

Seagul, Your idea of compression and patterns is similar to the example used by Lewis of a dot matrix resulting in a supervening image or awareness. There is still a lot of going back and forth as to whether that suffices to explain the gap between what is experienced and the sense data on which tha...

A_Seagul, That picture created from sense data - if a picture is created, how is it related to sense data? You have the empirical gaps to be bridged if the picture is separated from the data. Sellars would say you are expressing the myth of the given. If the sense data do not hold the picture, and y...

Re: Why is world full of bad people?

I think it is always dangerous to pose generalities. It blends a lot of particular different events together. Better to think why did that one person kick that cat. Consider that the kicker did not appreciate the cat, enjoy the cat like most enjoy the cat, had to commit violence. Consider what that ...

Re: Metaphysics: A Coping Mechanism

January 14th, 2013, 12:11 pm

There is the issue of epistemology, how can we be sure that our knowledge has some solid ground to stand on. Maybe knowledge is just made up of conventions. Metaphysics would provide the system that gives epistemology its solid ground. Descartes provided a dualistic metaphysics for that purpose, Heg...

Re: Virtuality replacing Reality

January 14th, 2013, 11:47 am

Drau, I think your questions are more about the standards we use to categorize our experiences as real or otherwise. Real is differentiated from imagination based first on how we interact with the world growing up. We learn a standard that categorizes real from imaginary. There was a time when the t...

Okisites, We certainly agree on activity and the universe. I'm trying to show that our use of the word consciousness reflects our intent to act, and devise a definition of sorts of consciousness. When we are conscious we are acting according to how we value (either positive, negative, or ambivalentl...

Forswanked - archaic word. The answer I gave you in the prior post showed the post that Alias said expressed my unhappiness to him, etc. His response did not correspond with what I had written. Thus the disconnect. Of course, you should have read that and so don't care or didn't read it. Now this ha...

Off the hook - well, I think it goes back to the old telephone. You leave it off the hook and you are disconnected. I use to hear it - never knew its origination but that sounds good to me.

Re: Consciousness without ability

Toadny, Maybe you didn't read my first reply to Alias - "Alias, My "act/think" was meant to draw readers from every opinion to the question, not to put forward two distinct abilities. Based on what you think consciousness is, is consciousness possible in an inactive state? If not, the...

Re: Consciousness without ability

Logic_ill - I'd like to here your description of a passive activity. I understand passive to mean no activity. You seem to have some idea of what you mean by consciousness when you wonder if your baby was conscious in the womb. I think you would have to clarify what that consciousness is for me beca...

Alias,

Your first question is outside of this thread. Your second question doesn't address the thread. Your question asks about entities as external objects when this thread is busy discussing one's own consciousness. Good questions for sure, but to be dealt with elsewhere.

Ghotspy,

I think eternity is an empty concept. I only used it, qualified by a parenthetical, to be a reference point within the thread. So, I agree eternity cannot be felt.

Even if something is able to be stored somewhere, when it is pulled up it is pulled into all that is going on at that time. It would not be altered in part, but completely 'colored' by interpretation of the present. Then, if stored somewhere, how could it be stored perfectly, without change? Do they...
