I think the problem we have is that reason vs. religion is a false dichotomy. That's not to say that a lot of what religion often teaches isn't loaded with governance-oriented baggage and human observations twisted around to have divine authority, it's more like religion is a conglomerate of ideas that aren't necessarily 100% related. Because our politics these days are still relatively dumb and tend to cater to the common denominator it means that tribes still face off across largely arbitrary lines. Thankfully there seem to be a lot of highly intelligent people out there who are doing a lot to decode religion, particularly the likes of Peterson, Molyneux, Habermas, etc. and even Harris to some extent when he gets into the importance of internal subjective dialog and the quality of it being highly important.
I think the only step forward for all involved is something a bit like the Greeks did - ie. culture and community through something more akin to philosophy or religion. It would mean remodeling and rebuilding faith in the concept of mutual benefit and initiatic societies. That of course has it's own challenges as well and it needs governance and a very particular or narrow band of what's allowed to be 'secret' within a particular society (the initiations and certain upper-level teachings for example) and you need leadership in the grand lodges of such organizations that takes a zero tolerance policy on things like illegal drugs and firearms sales, sexual coercion, etc.. - something that most well-known initiatic societies in the US are doing quite well with.
In a lot of ways I think this also dovetails into the question of what we'll do when 25%, then 50%, and more of the population is automated out of employment. Assuming that a universal basic living income is established our culture's nihilism will be on steroids unless we figure out how to take the best of religion and scoop it back out into culture before half of the populace is in something like involuntary retirement.
