What is perfect?

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

Exactly, but if I don't accept that God has to be perfect then your argument doesn't apply. I can easily conceive of a God that isn't perfect, the fact that I don't believe in him is purely a matter of chance. If I did believe in him your argument wouldn't work.
Yes, I went through all that with Spectrum.
He convinced me that the currently reigning Abrahamic god does claim to perfection.
To any other religion, any other gods, the condition ceases to apply.
If perfection does exist in our universe, the condition ceases to apply.
It's an If-then logical derivation. As such, I deem it valid.

They were, essentially, Coronation Street characters. Getting married, having secret affairs, confronting each other in the pub when they were found out. Very relatable.
That's because they represented human characteristics as much as natural phenomena. Greek mythology as written in the dramas and epics is more about the psychology of human relationships than it is about spiritual experience -- which, of course, is the proper function of drama and poetry. They sneaked in the odd history lesson, and some sage advice on governance and generalship, which later trickled down to English public-school boys. But it's hardly a worshipful literature.

Okay, so we are just discussing the viability of the Abrahamic God. First of all I think you should describe exactly what this God would have to be like in order to legitimately claim perfection, then we'll know what we're arguing about.

Perfection is something dependent on a culture and a civilization and varies from cultural background. For some tribes in africa , the prolongment of the lower lip with a disc is a sign of beauty and with it part of perfection. Perfection is achieved mostly for others and many times not for oneself , at least if you're critical thinker, and is more a status simbol attached to a personality than a real state of beeing. It's better to be content with oneself and the people who like you and achieve the goals one think can reach in a certain amount of time than beeing perfect for others. Perfection itself is a predicate of society and has something to do with the narcisstic love of the social status in a society.

In addition i want to mention that the african tribe of the mursi has the beauty standard of prolonging ones lip with a plate and it's even told of the kayapo tribe in brasil where this is an ideal of beauty.

For some people fiddling ones fingers in a nut-bowl of a bar after toilet usage is quite well mannered , even if they didn't wash their hands. Those people can even call themselves perfect !!! So ideals vary.

I would say that you are conflating "perfection" with standards - the idea of regarding something as "right" or "correct".

People in a society may regard certain attire or cosmetic adornments are more or less tasteful, ok if you're poor or a kid, and so on.

If you won't wear our piercings, you can love our community or leave it. What does that have to do with perfection?

I wouldn't want be the one having to judge which of these decorations is most perfect (I lean toward Mirame - 3rd row down, 5th pic)
, any more than I'd like to be on the panel at an Olympic diving competition.
Let's just say they're all beautiful but none can be perfect.

No, that's not what we're discussing. God is not the main subject of the thread, and we've covered that aspect of perfection already.
