Invitation to listserv for philosophical system-building (currently, ontology)

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

Invitation to listserv for philosophical system-building (currently, ontology)

Post by lsanger »

Hi philosophers--I've started an old-fashioned listserv called "Systematic Enlightenment Philosophy." Right now we're focused on metaphysics, and even more specifically, on the ontology of objects/concrete particulars...at least, that's what I'm writing about.

Might be a niche interest, but if you (a) miss long-form listserv type discussion where people explore ideas rather than burnish their online reputations, and (b) fancy yourself a system-builder after the style of the Enlightenment, or are merely interested in such a thing, then please join!

Students and academics and people out of that scene for a while (like me) welcome.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum ... philosophy

See below for the list's welcome message.

---------------

Systematic Enlightenment Philosophy is a group of friends—and you can join us—interested in building our own philosophical systems in the spirit and in support of the best of Enlightenment ideals, things like objective reality, truth, knowledge, rationality, earnest moralism, representative democracy, the dignity and rights of man, freedom, tolerance, limited government, uplifting art, beauty, and the artes liberales—the deep benefits of knowledge of classical literature and thought, broadly construed.

We are philosophers and philosophy students who are, heroically or foolishly, attempting to stem the rising tide of postmodernism and irrationalism and, in short, all academic and cultural movements that, deliberately or not, would destroy even the best of our Western Enlightenment inheritance.

We are, or take very seriously, system-building and system-builders, not just of the history of philosophy but of today. The group was started by Larry Sanger ([email protected]), who has a Ph.D. in philosophy from Ohio State (2000), but who has since then mostly been building websites. Larry was co-founder of Wikipedia and is now CIO of Everipedia. Larry is refining a philosophical system partly through conversation on this list. We encourage that others do the same, simply by developing their own thoughts on the series of topics that Larry will be writing about—it would be fantastic if a whole raft of systems arose at the same time, even if they begin life as informal, tentative remarks in response to discussion.

This is a moderated discussion list of an old-fashioned type. Please acquaint yourself with how the list works, or you'll be confused:

* All messages are moderated. Currently the moderator is Larry Sanger.
* We'll forward no more than 8 messages per day. This is so that the discussion stays focused and manageable. This policy also tends to keep discussion at a high level.
* Disrespectful posts will be sent back for edits. We will be rather strict about this. We have no desire to censor anyone's thoughts, but we want this group to remain collegial.
* Unhelpful posts will be rejected. Please stay on topic, and try to keep the level of discourse interesting, substantive.

This sort of group is the antidote to the silly, emotion-driven, merely ideological, and perfunctory sort of exchanges that take place on Twitter and Facebook.
