Kant Versus Heidegger?

Kant Versus Heidegger?

Post by Spectrum »

Heidegger criticized the philosophy of Kant and rejected the idea of the noumenon.
Here is one view re who has the better philosopher;
Therefore at the end of the day I would want to say that Kant is the much greater philosopher of the two--and correspondingly, that the Critique of Pure Reason is a much greater book than Being and Time--precisely because Kant’s Critical philosophy or general theory of human cognition, human volition, and the limits and scope of human theoretical and practical reason, comes much closer to the truth about the nature of creatures like us than Heidegger’s existential phenomenology.

Nevertheless, Heidegger’s tendentious interpretations of Kant do open up some otherwise latent and previously unexplored aspects of Kant’s Critical philosophy--and this has paid dividends in recent “continentally” inspired scholarly work on Kant by, for example, Béatrice Longuenesse and Wayne Waxman. It also remains true that some of Heidegger’s existential-phenomenological insights into the human condition significantly enrich Kant’s theories of cognition, volition, and reason.

So by all means read Kant, read Heidegger, read Heidegger on Kant (and here you may also want to consult Weatherston’s useful book), then read Kant again.
Then throw away your Heidegger and teach Kant to your students.
For the details read here;

Hanna Robert is a pure bred Kantian, so the above views.

Too broad a question. Too many answers. Throw away your Heidegger? But what about Heidegger's critique of Kant's aprioriti of space and time? What about Kant's rational metaphysics? Is rationalism what is really a term that describes human nature? Morally this does not wash at all.

Note he stated,
  • "So by all means read Kant, read Heidegger, read Heidegger on Kant (and here you may also want to consult Weatherston’s useful book), then read Kant again.
    Then [only] throw away your Heidegger and teach Kant to your students."
I believe like most philosophers who came after Kant -Schopenhauer, Schelling, Hegel, etc. used are sieve with large holes and thus missed out on the essence of Kant's ideas.

To be fair and to get a better understanding of the difference, I have to read up Heidegger again more thoroughly [just started but it is a very tedious and time consuming process]. I'd spent 3 years full time to gain a reasonable understanding of Kant [have not refreshed on it so a bit rusty] and I wonder how long I will have to spend on Heidegger.

I am in pretty much the same boat. Foolos4 made me read B&T again, parts, that is. But the greater understanding comes from critical papers, of which I have a great many, waiting to be read. You are welcome to them if you like, if there is a way to send them.
But Heidegger is no transcendental philosopher. I take the sections on instrumentality of signs, along with his critical take on Descartes's dualism and Kant's spatailty, to make the mean that human dasein is ready to hand, and presence at hand is reducible to ready to hand. This means space, in dasein, is NOT the apriori form of intuition of Kant; but is rather this instrumentality that takes up presence AS instrumentality. Far cry from Kant on this. Kant is much closer to Husserl.
I am reading Heidegger's Phenomenological Interpretations of Kant Critique now, Just started, past the intro.
