Belinda alluded to the issue. With sex, secondary features are always emphasised to the point of caricature in a connected and competitive society.

Okay, men on average are bigger, stronger and more athletic than women. So why do we need the exaggeration? How did we end up hobbling ourselves with pencil skirts and high heels (or be corsetted to the point of weirdness earlier last century and before)? Is a woman any less of a woman without makeup, wearing jeans and a t-shirt? Obviously not. So why all the frippery? One might as well ask a peacock, because it too is hobbled by its evolved response to sexual pressure.

How did we manage to take the age old attraction to robust, healthy looking people and keep slimming down until it became obsessive? Fashion, like almost everything in society, changes rapidly. It can only deviate from the standard - apparent fitness to reproduce robust offspring - one way or another. Either bigger or thinner. In the old days, more Rubenesque women were favoured. Now it's skinny women. The pendulum will no doubt keep swinging.

The basic motivation is power. If ankle breaker shoes or corseted waists add sufficient social prestige to either sex, that sex will wear them. Men wear and did wear daft styles the Sun King of France for an outstanding example.

Women in bikinis who are young and fit for work, sex or childbearing obviously and I mean obviously possess considerable power to get a powerful husband or powerful child father or even temporary prestige as they flaunt their beauty.

Similarly women in posh business suits flaunt authority and thus power, and if the business woman looks healthy, young, and active without looking like a silly bimbo she is that much more enabled to land a good salary. Power !

1. Women should stop listening to men's ideas of women.

2. Women should stop listening to women who take seriously the ideas of men.

3. I live with a condition, that of being male, and so women should not listen to my ideas about them.

Too many men suffer reactivity with regard to sex and sexuality. Too many women suffer reactivity to reactive men.

I don't think it's particularly attractive when they're thin to the point when it looks like they're going to die from dysentery.

Several posts back, I put down a link to a psychology today site written by experts who have done research in this very topic. It asks the question of who can best evaluate the attractive qualities of women, males or females. We all look at ourselves and evaluate ourselves through the social looking glass. The psychology today post indicates that men do find the average woman attractive, but that women are subjected to conditioning factors such as fashion magazines that distorts their image of what is attractive and not attractive. When women get the distorted image of themselves, they often engage in machinations to correct something that does not need to be corrected. I would not put the blame on the average "garden variety" male but on the media. From what I understand, those who operate fashion shows use very thin women in order to save expenses on the material that is used to cloth them, because the material is very expensive. ..................... To repeat: It is men who can best evaluate what is attractive and not attractive in females. It is the media that distorts the image of what female attractiveness means. .............. The universal attractiveness feature in women is the waist hip ratio and of being filled out in the thigh area. This is true from the perspective of men whether consciously or unconsciously.

-- Updated May 3rd, 2014, 11:18 am to add the following --

The attributes of a woman that are most conducive to her ability to conceive, to carry a pregnancy to term, to deliver a baby most easily, and to nourish the baby when it is born and the female attributes that most attractive to men are one and the same regardless of whether men and women are fully aware of it or not.

Those experts in research should have just asked me and then I could have saved them a lot of trouble.

And I cannot believe those who operate fashion shows use thin women to save on material. Far more expense must go into the design and making which would likely relegate amounts of cloth used as irrelevant. It is not even cost effective to make small amounts of fabric due to the efforts involved in designing and making the fabrics.

Your last conclusion just says that women's attributes towards their attractiveness is read by the male's erect penis. Which is essentially true. Maybe this is why women should not listen to the ideas of men because men are quite likely to not admit to the "true" reasons for being attracted and therefore will just make something untrue up.

Being attracted to beauty does not make it a lasting attraction, look at how many beautiful women are left by the men who were attracted to them, moving on to another beauty. Or how many rich men attract a woman only to have her leave if he losses his wealth or a more handsome rich man shows up.

Size 6 or 12 can be both attractive and unattractive, it depends on how the body is shaped and what someone is looking for.

Yes, beauty/ugly is diverse among cultures and individuals within cultures. Boredom of beauty digresses to ugly or just something different. The owner of the bunny ranch in Nevada inferred diversity is what men desire, wanting to experience skinny, fat and in-between as well as tall, short, midget, and any other differences that exist, that way interest is not exhausted.

Misty,

GLORY be to God for dappled things—

For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;

For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;

Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;

Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;

And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim. All things counter, original, spare, strange;

Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)

With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;

He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change: 10

Praise him.

Give me the size 6. Chubby women are ugly universally and I will never date them. Very skinny women are healthy and should not be shamed so much by uglier, fatter women. Obesity is an epidemic in the u.s. and far worse than "anorexia and bulimia".

Ugly people should not criticize beautiful people. You cannot redefine beauty to your personal preferences. Because beauty is objective in nature, not subjective.

I disagree with the above statement. Beauty has always been, in the eye of the beholder. One mans treasure is another mans junk. What I find beautiful, is my own personal perspective and preference, with no need to justify my taste or lack of taste, to anyone. In music, do you find heavy metal to be beautiful or Beethoven? In art, do you like abstract or realistic? It just doesn't matter what you find beautiful, because there is something for everyone out there, including different sizes and shapes of women. Like they say, " there's a lid for every pot."
Even though you can see me, I might not be here.

Beauty is objective, because it is a judgment. And all judgments are objective. For example, you can "prefer this or that", but there is an objective standard when you differentiate between "good or bad this" to "good or bad that". In the case of beauty, you are comparing types of women. Say you have one white woman and one black woman. You can have a beautiful or ugly white woman. You can have a beautiful or ugly black woman.

If this is true, then you must agree with me about an objective standard of beauty in women. Because types is not a factor of beauty. Because taste and personal preference, subjectivity, is also not a factor of beauty, by your agreement and admission.

Another example: Action movie versus Comic movie. The action movie can be "good or bad" quality. The comic movie can be "good or bad" quality. The preference of action or comic movie is categorically different than "good and bad". Good and bad, is the objective qualifier.

Ugly and beautiful is also an objective qualifier. Like goodness and badness/evilness.
