Country music, is it OK?

Use this forum to have philosophical discussions about aesthetics and art. What is art? What is beauty? What makes art good? You can also use this forum to discuss philosophy in the arts, namely to discuss the philosophical points in any particular movie, TV show, book or story.

If you can, see them in the smallest possible venue. I saw them in Sydney's Entertainment Centre, which is a big, echoey stadium and it spoiled the gig for me. I love the Dan's jazzy textures and ideas, but nuances get lost in stadiums and it detracted. The other Dan fans I attended with felt the same.
Luckily here in Portland the venues are pretty small compare compared to LA and the NE. Also thanks to the secondary ticket market you can get seats anywhere you want.

Absolutely. With a song called Kid Charlemagne about a 70's San Francisco drug dealer, what's not to like.

Uummm... this is the country music thread (in a Philosophy Forum), so even a tangential SD reference will add dramatically to the philosophy quotient.

To tie it all in, Steely Dan's Dirty Work, Pearl of the Quarter, Any Major Dude Will Tell You and With a Gun were country tracks - and some of my least favourite Dan tracks :) Much prefer Aja, The Royal Scam and Your Gold Teeth.

My answer to the OP is: Yeah, why not? If you must. But there are far better things to listen to.

Ok, I'll admit I'm partial to some of the golden oldies like Dusty Springfield's Stand by Your Maaayan and Tammy Wynette's Wishing and Hoping but they don't write them like that any more.

Cheers

I know what you did there, Lagaya - I'd also say that Dusty was never country :)

I once read about a study where they monitored the pleasure centres in the brains of various animals to find out how they responded to music. The results were quite interesting, although I can't really remember all that much about it. I seem to think dolphins quite liked Miles Davis, I suppose it must be something to do with all the blue. Anyway, the point is, the only creature that responded positively to country music was the turkey, it turned out they just couldn't get enough of it.

My daughter loves country music, as for myself I seldom listen to music. I see nothing wrong with country music. Although I prefer classical music.
