Is Utilitarianism Compatible with Moral Relativity
I believe that the two are compatible as utilitarianism because if you abide by the most widespread used moral set then you will be following utilitarianism. What do you think?

*I meant to say relativity- not emissivity, as I was typing on my phone, autocorrect struck once again.TigerNinja wrote:Utilitarianism is the concept that the correct moral choice is determined by whichever of these given choices affects the highest amount of people in the most positive manner. Moral emissivity is another concept which implies a lack of actual morality as it is relative to the person's or society's culture.

Re: Is Utilitarianism Compatible with Moral Relativity
An expression of morality can only be understood and validated by the individual as an expression of morality. The actualization of a moral expression can be observed externally by another only as an act, for the internal movement is understandable only to the individual self. To suggest a moral expression is valid only if understandable by others suggests morality is nothing more then social interpretation, arguably reducible to a social convention or dogma. Utilitarianism is better regarded as social morality expressed as mandates. The question your positing requires a more thorough development of moral relativism, if only to state what moral relativism isn't. As posited utilitarianism and moral relativism are indefinable because 1. if moral relativism is compatible with Utilitarianism as posited then its compatible for you as the individual as an individual morality.
2. If Utilitarianism is compatible with moral relativism as posited then it ceases to be relative.
If utility demanded that you and those whom you may love need to be sacrificed for social utility ( a logical possibility) is it still compatible (for you)?
Utilitarianism demands that any and every individual is subject to becoming the minority in a logically possible condition.
