O so true! Exactly like the words written down the left leg of the sweat pants I used to wear "Just Do It" and if you succeed you'll never regret having done it.

Of course it does since it would still allow for the possibility to regret not having done it! In my scenario regret is not a factor.

OK! Now I'm beginning to be confused. Logic seems to have gone into the quantum reality zone.

If I want to do myself in - which is what I assumed we're talking about - am I going to regret my decision because if I do I have to option to change my mind. If conversely I manage to make myself extinct am I going to say "oops, I should have thought this over! Should have watched the detour signs before traveling into that country from whose bourne no traveler returns?"

...please advise! I'm near to traveling the path less traveled:shock:

 I wandered away from the point and refered to choices, generally - that one should not regret their own choices in life. So, back to the point: Yes, just do it and, yes, there certainly will be nobody to regret it.(We assume, anyway)? But putting an end to ones life...is that the end of consciousness, too?

Euthanasia - good or bad? Societal choice?

Suicide - good or bad? Individual choice?

Is suicide euthanasia? Is euthanasia suicide?

Is euthanasia suicide for society.

 Before making a judgement as to whether "Euthanasia" is good or bad we need to define good & bad which probably brings us back to morality which then brings us back to religion - what a mess!! Why cannot Euthanasia just be......Euthanasia? and not be put through the moral wringer? Societal choice? It seems meddling humankind cannot just live & let live so, we are saddled with another mess!! (Though that does not stop thee & me enacting our own choice.) Is suicide Euthanasia? The Exit Organisation of Australia has tried to rid itself of this much maligned word and uses the term 'Dying with Dignity' which implies ending one's life without all the societal fanfare. Is Euthanasia suicide for society? Hell Mike, go and have another coffee!!!

I believe I will. Have another cup of coffee, that is.

Potatoes, potahtoes... Suicide, death with dignity...

Dead is dead. The discussion really has to do with access. And who is in control.

You made me laugh. Always a good thing in the morning. Thanks!

Euthanasia or Suicide?

Post by Metathought »

Euthanasia is generally viewed as the death of a suffering person that is administered or assisted by others. Suicide is normally seen as the death of a person that is administered by himself or herself. Suppose a person has been diagnosed as suffering from terminal cancer or some other disease for which medical science has no cure but that person is still of sound mind to make his or her own decisions. If that person consciously ends his/her life using a gun or some other means to avoid his/her present and future suffering, is that suicide or euthanasia, or is it suicide and euthanasia, or is it self-administered euthanasia? Is there such a thing? There have been actual cases of such events.

Or if the person is in a hospital and is hooked up to medical equipment which keeps him/her alive, and he/she is able to reach and pull the plug of the equipment, and does so of his/her own free will to terminate his/her suffering and life, is that suicide or euthanasia? If the plug is pulled by the medical personnel, it will be treated as euthanasia as it is normally viewed. Does it make a difference as to who pulls the plug when the objective of ending the suffering is the same? If it does, why? The suffering person knows first-hand the extent of his/her suffering, much better than the medical personnel. Or is the issue a purely legal matter?

Considering the rapid rise in the numbers of people living to over 80 and the numbers of those with problems of dementia I think we will be forced to rethink the way we look at euthanasia and not for the better.

It makes no sense to keep zombies alive, especially if they don't have the savings to pay for their own upkeep.

The term euthanasia is to get to attain peace and freedom from the world. This can be refraining oneself from pain or may be when wishes of a person are fulfilled. Considering it cruel is not the point of discussion as suicide is a painful form of euthanasia. And now the world has come to the stage wherein people find pre paid funeral website for keeping their relatives and dear ones away from the burden of the same.

It's a no-brainer. It should be left up to the patient, with informed consent the only criterion. Since no one would choose it unless they couldn't take the suffering any longer, there's no chance of making a decision they could regret if they survived.

Anyone who opposes this right in principle has less compassion than Al Qaeda. At least the 9/11 hijackers got to die instantly.
