Is God an atheist?
Answers may vary depending on definitions of "God" and "atheist"?
To start with, let's say:
- "God" is God as described in the Bible, especially the Old Testament (which may or may not be an accurate description of a real being).
- An "atheist" is a being who does not believe in God or gods.
- A "god" is a supernatural being that is worshipped as the controller of some part of the universe.
Does God believe in a God or god that is supernatural relative to his own nature?
In Isaiah, God says that no God was formed before him; there is no other God besides him.
If God believes that he is God and that he exists, then it may seem that he is a theist by definition, but it may not be as straightforward as this ...
If you consider yourself to be an atheist (or you can imagine that you are an atheist), and you can imagine that you have just created (or directed someone to create) a primitive sub-universe (using a computer) that seems as real to its inhabitants as your universe seems real to you, and you can accept that you are God of this sub-universe, do you now consider yourself to be a theist, or do you still consider yourself to be an atheist?
If you believe in God (or you can imagine that you believe in God) and you create a sub-universe, how truthful and honest would it be for you to tell your creations that there is no other God besides you? Would you command your creations not to worship any other God before you, or might you encourage them to worship your God?
