The "One True" religion

Discuss philosophical questions regarding theism (and atheism), and discuss religion as it relates to philosophy. This includes any philosophical discussions that happen to be about god, gods, or a 'higher power' or the belief of them. This also generally includes philosophical topics about organized or ritualistic mysticism or about organized, common or ritualistic beliefs in the existence of supernatural phenomenon.

The "One True" religion

Post by magicmusician »

OK all

Every "church" claims to have the right beliefs
The Catholics, the Baptists, Islam, Budhists and so on

Each of them say that through prayer and/or meditation you can know if it is true.

I dont want to get into religous debate here - thats for another website lol - but as far as philosophy is concerened can there be any one individual "true" church/gospel/set of beliefs

Well, I'd find it hard for all religions to be true. For example, in my faith, Islam, we say that Muhammed (pbuh) was the final prophet. He either was, or he was not. How can both be true? So not all religions can be true. If your asking if all religions can go to heaven, that's a topic for another time.

Haha every philosopher claims to have the one true philosophy....which one is true?

The concept of religion is no less simple.

Buddhism shouldn't really be categorized as a 'religion'.

All small 'truths' are features of 'Truth'.
They only appear to contradict each other, to some Perspectives. Those Perspectives that see such contradiction are, themselves, true features of Truth.

Every "church" claims to have the right beliefs
That is simply not the case. There is a spectrum of dogmatism ranging from the very authoritarian Islam and Roman Catholicism at the dogmatic extreme,to the liberal Quakers, Sea of Faith and Unitarians at the liberal end.Certainly the last named don't claim to have the right beliefs, or indeed all the answers.

If a church claims there to be no one truth, isn't that them claiming to have the truth that there is no truth? Haha...any claim is either "we're right and they're wrong." If a religion claims that all religions are correct, isn't that them claiming to have the truth?

the one true religion is reason. your prayers are critical thought. your faith, is to know something.

reason comes to us not only from (a) book(s), but from what we have learned throughout our lives. the "god" like man practices reason.

I doubt strongly that any religion that has its standards concretely set in a book. a book is static it can not answer all questions, because the answer can change, case by case.

we must use reason to "translate" what the book says, and what our actions should be. therefore reason is the dominating force in religion, and everything else in a man who attempts to be god like.

a man of reason is a holy man.

Not necessarily. Perhaps they are presenting a Perspective. It is not necessarily a claim to 'truth', though it might be considered one, by some, until refuted.
Seems like a matter of Perspective.

Sufiism now exists in many different belief systems. I don't think Muslim Sufis would say other religions can be correct though. But honestly, I've never met a real 'Sufi'. Every Muslim does certain practices associated with Sufiism, but some take it to an extreme...

Some religions don't have a set of beliefs that everyone of that religion is expected to believe.

Ecumenicism

Post by Martin Ekdahl »

I have this idea that every system of thoughts created through history has a seed of truth. Take religions for example: Every religion has a load of values, symbols, tales, thoughts, moral codes et cetera. Some of these ideas corresponds quite good with similar thoughts in other religions (as well as ideologies, philosophies, and so on). Almost like Archetypes. There we have the over arching idea of the ecumenic - to see the similarities instead of the differences. Some religions has made this ecumenical meta-idea central in their theological understanding of the universe and life. For example, the Unitarian Universalism, stresses not differences but similarities as the core of religion. I like that idea, while I myself have realized how so much in belief reappears from epoch to epoch and through all cultures of the world. Therefor (as a agnostic) I often say: "It may be true and I may not, It almost certainly has a core of truth, If it reappears enough many times it is not simply something isolated but rather a part of a greater system of thoughts". This fits on every religion I have ever stumbled over through my life. And, yes: "If they can't take a joke - screw them!".

The "One" true religion would necessarily be a religion of only one. That "one" (lower case "o") would have to be only one what?... belief?, idea? book?

I think the only thing that everyone in the world would agree to is pain. Because not even everybody agrees in death. One thing is for sure,

Pain is universal.

This leads me to the first Noble Truth, in hiphop layman's terms:

Every mofo suffers.

Damn, maybe Buddhism is the One True Religion!!!

No one is surprised that there are many different piano teaching schools. They likely can all teach you to play the piano, more or less. Some work better with certain individuals, or work more poorly. Thus for an individual, there may be one best school. But translating that to another student of piano is close to worthless.

None of this stops each of the schools advertising that they are the "best". But that is all it is: advertising. You don't believe all advertising, do you? Only a rube does that.
