A Call for Free University Education for All
As far as ideas are concerned that would be an education in the humanities. Unfortunately scientific and vocational university courses don't have enough time to allocate time to history-of, and philosophy-of.

Hi Belinda,Belinda wrote:It is obvious that some posters are both enthusiastic seekers after truth and good at arguing but have not had their ideas directed into fertile and credible channels of enquiry. Such people should for their own benefits and the benefit of their society get a university education, at public expense .

Hello, Who do you refer to?Belinda wrote:It is obvious that some posters are both enthusiastic seekers after truth...
Who is " the public" and "public expense" is whose expense? The government don't generate wealth, it merely redistribute it.Belinda wrote:Such people should for their own benefits and the benefit of their society get a university education, at public expense .
A free university education is not necessarily a good idea, despite the good intention.
The function of a formal education system is to reproduce the class system in any society.
The higher education, especially the elite universities in a capitalist society, is an institution where the future upper class can acquire some "culture capital" so their claim for the position of upper class can be legitimate.
Therefore, Free University Education for All will disturb the functioning social order and do more harm than good to society.
-- Updated October 8th, 2015, 6:00 am to add the following --
When we discuss education we treat it as if it really is an isolated and independent entity, but it is not. The formal education system is part of the larger "superstructure" of a capitalist society. When we ask why societies, why even many of those rich societies can not provide free university education, we have to first understand education in the capitalism context and the role this education system plays in capitalism: For example, Why in this world only a handful of people can discuss very sophisticated philosophical questions in an elegant salon while while many, or even the majority of earthings can not write a letter properly or read the written laws of their governments?

Here's a catch, sort of. It was just announced that for $1,500 (which is cheap), you can get yourself a degree when you successfully complete the course.Philosophy Explorer wrote:Totally free, no catches Belinda.Belinda wrote:Right you are Greta.

Um.. While delightfully cynical, I'm not sure this really stands up. Did England, which had free university education up until 1998, not have a class system? Does Scotland still not have one? Is the production of junior doctors, scientists, cryptographers, etc. really just an expression of social class? I'd suggest they have a purpose beyond that.Above us only sky wrote:A free university education is not necessarily a good idea, despite the good intention.
