Favourite Quotes from the bible?
as someone who wouldn't really call himself religious, but rather interested in the history of religion and how it shaped societies over the centuries, actually sitting down and reading the bible is always a curious but also fun experience.
So what is your personal favorite Quote from the bible?
I didn't really mark nice quotes while reading for a bit, but rather marked interesting concepts like "1. John 3 2", man becoming like god when he identifies him for what he is, or hints to a "historical" Abraham, being born in the Mesopotamia city of Ur.
This isn't completely without own interest, for I'm looking for a nice quote from the bible, which should be unrelated to "god", that could be used as a "wedding line" or "trust demanding" (not quite sure about the English word here, the quote that a couple uses in a church marriage).
Greetings

1 Corinthians 14
English Standard Version (ESV)
As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

Regarding the Bible, I like the following:
1 - Do unto others as you would they do unto you (rough translation from Koine Greek).
2 - Love thy neighbor as thyself (rough translation from ancient Hebrew).
3 - Love thy friends and hate thine enemies (rough translation from ancient Hebrew).
4 - Love God with all thy heart, mind, and breath (rough translation out of ancient Hebrew).
5 - Render to Caesar that which is Caesar's and to God that which is God's (rough translation out of Koine Greek).

That having been said, my favorite quote was by Jesus:
"Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and render unto God that which is God's."
This was in Matthew, chapter 22 and verse 21.

Re: Favourite Quotes from the bible?
Great topic! The Bible is an inexhaustible source of philosophical food for thought. I have always enjoyed thinking about spiritual topics from a philosophical point of view rather than theological. I'm afraid too many people dismiss the Bible thinking it is too narrow-minded. It's actually like a library.
Wrap your head around this:
Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 (NIV)
"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher, "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?
The teacher has seen it all, being a king, and can't discern a profound value for all the struggles a typical man goes through in his life. Can you or I? When I die all my possessions will go to someone else. Is that fair?
One conclusion he reaches is in 5:18
Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him--for this is his lot.
How fatalistic! Surely there is more to life. We can think of various purposes in life, such as making some contribution to society, but Ecclesiastes is so negative.
The whole book of Ecclesiastes is fascinating and full of proverbs. Probably the keystone is 9:10
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
The knowledge that we are mortal motivates us to do what?
I assert that people will answer this in their own unique way. Everyone finds their own meaning to life, right?
The actual conclusion is in 12:13-14, he exhorts the reader to live ethically. Fair enough.

Re: Favourite Quotes from the bible?
23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!”
24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.
Another fine moral lesson :|

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.
