Do you have an ereader? If so, which one?

Do you have an ereader? If so, which one?

Post Number:#1  PostNovember 8th, 2011, 1:30 pm

My wife bought me a Nook Touch for my birthday. I love it. I figure most people who enjoy discussing philosophy are also avid readers. Even more, philosophy books are more likely than most to be found in the public domain or otherwise be available for free. You may have to pay for the ebook version of the new best-selling novel, but I wouldn't expect to pay for even the most famous texts written by a great thinkers in the 18th century, for example.

Anyway, I am wondering who else has an ereader. If you have one, which one do you have and why? Are you happy with it.

My wife picked mine out for me of course. But she chose well. I would have picked the same one. I prefer the e-ink display over the back-lit ereaders because I find it easier on my eyes for long bouts of reading, particularly in the evening time in bed. Also, my older sisters both already had Nooks so it made sense to also go with that brand for sharing and such.

Most of all what I love about my new Nook is that is has led me to read a lot more. I did not realize how much I was slowed down and hindered in my reading endeavors by having to go to the library, request a book, usually then waiting for it to be delivered from another library or returned by the person who currently has it, going back to the library again to pick it up. Now I always have my Nook right at my fingertips. And because my personal interests tend to often be for books that are free in the ebook version, for me at least I think the cost of the Nook will be more than paid for in the savings.

I personally like the hard copies and the traditional feel of it, so no, I don't think I ever will use something like this.

I own a kindle and love it. I agree that hardback books are different; if I was to invest in a large journal or report, I would probably buy a hardback copy, as it feels more permanent and personal. I would however use the kindle for small, public-domain articles and novels, as it's more manageable and easier to read throughout, but not jumping from one place to another, in the book, personally.
