Personally written wisdom sayings

Chat about anything your heart desires here, just be civil. Factual or scientific questions about philosophy go here (e.g. "When was Socrates born?"), and so most homework help questions belong here. Yes, at heart we are all blood-soaked monsters.

We instinctively fear obliteration of the self yet we also instinctively crave that very obliteration every night.

Never be proud of yourself; yours is just one of many journeys. The moment you are proud you stop doing the things and being the person that made you proud in the first place.

I think that's the first time I've seen Dick Emery quoted on this website!

On the subject of classic "buts", this from Tony Blair:

"A day like today is not a day for soundbites, really. But I feel the hand of history upon our shoulders. I really do."

Sometimes all you remember are the soundbites.

'' A day like today is not a day for soundbites, really. But I feel the hand of history upon our shoulders. I really do."

1998 - 8 April, arriving in Belfast for the talks which produced the Good Friday Agreement.

But don't you ever think that of someone as you read their comments.
You can like a character even as they dick around...awfully.

Yes, that's true. And some people in real life can seem to be terrible people but you get the feeling that they'd be quite a laugh to go out for a drink with.

So perhaps Dick Emery was actually a great sage of the 1970's light entertainment world! :D

Another one of his catchphrases that springs to mind: "Dad! I fink I got it wrong again." Perhaps that was supposed to be Jesus talking to God, symbolically representing the imperfect state of all humanity.

Stumbled across these the other day titled “Alterations”:

- We are inherently insane creatures that consciously clutch at the illusion of sanity.

- To walk down one road is a fools choice. To walk down many is a mad mans. Step into the fields!

- If you want to read what is being written step off the page.

- A question is s cross reference of two different realities.

- Treat a question as a tool to alter your perspective.

- Revenge is self-mutilation.

- Language is the eulogy of experience.

- Not just variety! Appreciation of variety!

- As social beings some things come to the fore; such as influence, responsibility, purpose, admiration and individuation. Some we want more than others!

- Reality accommodates where reason absconds.

- There are so many words and so little meaning for them to grasp at!

- What we understand today is due to the loss of how we previously understood.

- To realise is akin to being “startled.”

- Evil is what passes beyond the grasp of empathy. What we cannot relate to we call Evl and do Evil to!

- What we like is what we believe ourselves to be in spite of what we are.

- Belief without thought is akin to thoughtless action!

An artist can be as passionate as you like and still produce **** in a can. For art you need to make some effort and cherish the craft of art to produce something worthwhile.
