I recently updated the avatar uploading script to automatically resize avatars. Before it would reject them if they were too big, but now it would just shrink them. A black box sounds like it is having trouble resizing the images. Are you sure the images are not too large?

I resized the above image to 100 pixels x 95 pixels which brings the file to 10kb.
This file is what I have set as my current avatar and shows as a black box.
