Logic, mathematics and Language section

Post by mickalos »

Logic is a pretty big area of philosophy, I think deserving of its own section on the forums. It could also be incorporated with the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mathematics.

I will probably add a section like that soon. Thank for the suggestions! For now, philosophy of logic topics can be posted in the general philosophy section.
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

My this sounds interesting. I doubt that there are enough people to keep the separate forums active, but I do fair clarity. May be in time the separate forums would attract more people who are specially looking for them.

I was about to ask a question about where to post about philosophy of mathematics as, although most of the discussion seems to be in E&M though there is some in philosophy of science. I think a (language?) logic and maths section would be great, though if there is not enough interest, some clarification on where to post such topics would be appreciated.

Actually, logic isn't really considered an area of philosophy anymore.

Logic may not be a part of philosophy, but the philosophy of logic is. Also, modal, dontic, temporal, etc, logics are usually investigated by self identified philosophers in my experience.

I agree that there is a philosophy of logic, but that's quite distinct from logic itself. For example, the philosophy of mathematics is not itself mathematics. The difference being that a 'philosophy of' is always a second-order inquiry, so the first-order inquiry is independent of it.

I think logic is the foundation of philosophy. Logic should apply to everything, everything should be questioned before taking it up as a belief. I just recently started a blog on philosophy and metaphysics.

Are members familiar with Hermann Hesse's opus magnum "The Glass Bead Game"? (GBG)This has always intrigued me as being the epitome of a conceptual integration of "logic, mathematics, language, music"\ There have been many attempts (including my own) to "concretize" the GBG into a practical format . It would be amazing if this site could be a platform for developing such a concept!
