I agree. I made that change. Thanks!Alun wrote:Sorry to be picky, but I'd suggest you move the button away from the quote button (maybe on the other side of ignore?), since we click "quote" for decent posts all the time.

Well I ask all of you to help me. Please report any posts that you think may break the rules.nameless wrote:^^^ We'll see...
I would rather be too strict and delete posts that are borderline to ensure that all posts meet our standards rather than try to separate the borderline from those that blatantly cross the line.
I want these forums to be the best place on the internet for in-depth, open-minded, civil debate and discussion about even the most complex or controversial topics. They won't be the best if they are filled with a bunch of posts that are borderline unacceptable, even if I get rid of all the posts that are clearly unacceptable (i.e. not just borderline). If it is questionable whether or not a post breaks the rules, I would rather just delete it so we only have posts that are not at all even questionable.
So, in short, please report any posts that break the rules and any posts that are borderline rule-breaking. I will review the posts and try to be as strict as possible in my assessment of them.
I ask all of you to help me by putting as much effort into making your posts productive and rule-abiding. For instance, I ask all of you to not just avoid being mean but to be as nice as possible so your posts are not even borderline mean and there is no question.
Thanks!
Scott

Anarchy and Amoralism for all, huh?!?!
I apologize for the sarcasm. Or will this post be deleted, too?
*** Note *** These are principles you have openly embraced, and I am obviously satirizing your desire for the end of the prevalance of their existence now.
Why censor free expresion when that was your original platform? While you're at it, please report all of my posts to [email protected]. And thanks for your support, Scott!

I wholeheartedly support free speech and freedom generally.whitetrshsoldier wrote:Wow, Scott!

But free speech is what gives you the right to write what you want on your own computer and save it to your own hard drive. Free speech does not mean a magazine publisher would have to publish something you wrote. Quite the contrary, forcing a magazine publisher to publish or not publish something would be a violation of the magazine publisher's free speech. A painter may take suggestions on what to paint or not paint, but if the painter chooses not to listen to any given suggestion doing so would not limit the freedom of speech of the suggester but would rather be the painter exercising his own freedom of speech. Similarly, it would be a violation for anyone to tell me what I can and cannot publish on my website (i.e. the hard drive's of my computer or computers I rent, of which I allow public viewing).
Anyway, this thread is for discussing the feature and making suggestions about it. We can discuss the philosophy and meaning of freedom of speech in another thread in the philosophical part of the forum. You can create your own topic about this specific aspect of free speech, or here is a topic you may be interested in: Censorship
Thanks,
Scott

I respect your right to run your site as you wish. I will move my "philosophical" discussion of this feature to a new thread in the "Ethics and Morality" Forum, under the title Is Scott's "Report" Function Morally/Ethically Justifiable?
As for the feature itself, I know that I work very hard on my posts, and do not save them on my own computer. When you delete them, along with sending the user a PM notifying them of the deletion of their post, could you also include the post itself so that it could be re-worded so it meets the site's standards?
That would be helpful so we could improve our content and clean up our own posts.

I also wish to endorse Scott's absolute right to run his site as he sees fit for the betterment and right he has to his optimal benefit.
Words that should be unnecessary for those who understand the meaning of capitalism and its relationship to communal service.

Think maybe Scott took the idea of the report function directly from the White House and our fearless leader?!?
