New Forum for Philosophy of Art?

Post by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes »

Please use this thread to vote for to help me decide whether or not to create a new "Philosophy of Art" category in which philosophical threads about art could be posted, including philosophical threads about films, TV shows, books, music, comics, et cetera.

The poll will be open for two weeks.

For more information about this proposal or to ask questions, please see the thread created by Homicidal Pacifist.

Thanks!
Scott

My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

I know you said to go to HP's thread with our questions, but this is just an endorsement of the idea for you, Scott.

I think music especially encourages us to explore many of the ideas that we discuss on this site [it does so for me]. It also often reflects our deepest seated fears/emotions/desires/thoughts.

If we had this forum, we could quote lyrics and discuss how we interpreted them, and how they led us to conclusions about life, metaphysics, epistemlogy, etc.

I think this is an outstanding idea!!!

Even if the discussions have less conciseness to them than the metaphysics section; discussion/thought of the arts is critical to the development of everything, just as science is, as all things are.

The more different sections the better, it focuses the discussion better. As long we keep in mind that it is all philosophy, and everything at the same time.

Yes, but with a caveat.

Philosophy of the Arts.

This would include the equally relevant and extremely closely related areas of theatre and film.

I thought that's what it did mean, Invictus. The term for paintings and sculpture is specifically 'fine arts'.

I thought that Scott chose that title because 'aesthetics' would put people off because
'aesthetics' looks difficult.
