Log in problem

Post by Owleye »

It appears I've been able to masquerade as another user, with the user name of owleye (who apparently goes by the handle Owleye). Here's how it happened: I received an e-mail from one of your members inviting me to discuss a book of the month selection (Man's Search for Meaning). I'm not familiar with your site, though I've been on many philosophy forums over the course of more than 20 years and it's possible I could be a member. On attempting to make a response to the e-mail using this forum's response mechanism it required me to log in. As my handle is owleye on many such forums, I entered the usual password that I supply discovering it not to work. I chose the "forgot password" route which had me putting my user name and e-mail address, and waited for the email that was subsequently forthcoming. Then, using the response mechanism of that email I logged in. I returned to the message that I received in the first e-mail and made my response to it, which you will find on that forum.

Having a desire to change that password, I looked around for an account section, and not finding it, began to have a look around within the site itself. At this point I began to suspect there was another owleye, especially seeing as how at the top of one of the pages, it told me that my most recent post was last month, which couldn't be right. I opened up the "your posts" page, finding that lo and behold there was a user named Owleye.

Discovering this prompted me to send a message to the site administrator, which I confess I couldn't find, so I chose to open up a new topic on this feedback forum. I hope it is adequate to my purpose.

As the original Owleye will undoubtedly be pissed that there is a loophole in the system that someone can easily masquerade as him or her, I strongly suggest you find a way of fixing this problem and if there's a way to get in touch with him or her, to get him or her back up and running. My apologies for infringing on his access, but I'm not in a position to undo what was done. Perhaps you are better equipped.

The usernames are case insensitive and there is only one Owleye as far as I can tell.
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

Apparently you think there's only one person with the user name of owleye, s/he being the same person who's been going by the user name of Owleye for some time now on your forum, merely on the basis that user names are case insensitive. As such you believe I and s/he are the same person and I am or s/he is playing a game with you. Maybe I'll see if I can log in under the user name Scott, using the same technique, so as to masquerade as you to try to convince you otherwise. But I'm not all that motivated to make such an effort as you seem satisfied with your conclusion. And that being the case, I've wasted your and my time. My apologies.

Au revoir

I did a search for all the users whose name starts with 'ow' of either uppercase or lowercase and there was only one owleye, which is what I meant when I told you as far as I can tell there is only one.

Can you give me the URL of a post made under the username owleye/Owleye that you didn't make?

Well, I looked at the posts that I'd claimed to be another person and, I am chagrined to tell you that indeed, they are my posts. I must say I don't have any recollection of having participated here, despite that it was apparently only last year that I'd made them. Looking further into it, I believe the site may have changed its design enough for me to not notice it was one that I'd engaged the prior year to see what it was about. I recognize the name John Jones, for example, which leads me to believe this is that forum. Interestingly, the new design, if indeed I'm right, is quite similar to one that I'm currently contributing to, and, as such, I think it is a significant improvement over what it was before. (The site I'm on is called philosophy chat forums, or something like that, but which has two main sub forums, science and philosophy.)
