Single Line Breaks

Post by Anathematized_one »

So, I ran into a problem when posting earlier.

If you make a single line break (by hitting the return key), the line break gets deleted. In order to separate text, you need to breaks, but then it renders as two breaks (like between the last paragraph and this one).

Sometimes though, it is necessary to make only one. Like when listing definitions of a word, which becomes gaudy when using the actual list mark-up.

One possible solution is, though I don't know how feasible it is on this forum, to set it up so that every return creates by default, a new paragraph (wrapped in paragraph tags). The paragraph inherently makes a white space between each one that is equal to the line hight.

Yet, to hold shift while pressing return would create a new line within the same paragraph that stays. An example of this would be in posting to a Wordpress blog.

The following code creates a single line break:

Code: Select all

[br][/br]
Also, when using the full editor as opposed to the quick reply box, there is a option you can check to preserve single line breaks if you need to use a lot of them making it inconvenient to use the BBcode over and over such as if you are copying and pasting relevant lyrics from a poem or list of some sort. Incidentally, you only need to check the option once and submit or preview it because what it does is actually replace all the single line breaks with the BBcode so that they are permanently saved in case you need to edit the post or someone else hits the reply button.

Ah thanks, I didn't even see that. Actually, I still don't see this check box, and I always use the full post editor.

It it because I've not had my account long enough/enough posts? Oh wait, I see it.

Will checking this box preserve the setting on any computer or just the one I use it on (by way of cookies)?

It will only effect that post.

And there's no way to make it a permanent option?

I mean, I understand the point of having it that way, so that idiots won't be able to make posts where individual paragraphs are all a wall of inseparable text.

But it does get to be a bit of a hassle to have to select it every time you need to, especially when it is something you don't do all the time.

Not yet, but I plan to add an option to the user control panel to alter the default setting.

Awesome!

And that would probably be best to be only accessible once a person has achieved the 3 days/10 posts that it takes to get a lot of the other options. Of course, I probably don't have to tell you that, you seem pretty intelligent, then again I can't really attest to that as I've been here maybe three days now and not really spoken much with anyone. :P
*NOTE!
I'm never indirect/insinuating w/out explicitly saying I am (but may not say exactly what). I have a large vocabulary, but use common speech (not all are the same reading level or speak native English). What I say means exactly that and nothing else.

OPTIONS > KEEP SINGLE LINE BREAKS

This option should really be activated by default! It would be much more useful if it were.

The default used to be that single line breaks were maintained. However, many new members would make numerous posts that were unreadable and ruined the relatively professional tone of the forum with things like:
This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph.
This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.
Or:
This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is
a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first
paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first
paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This
is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first
paragraph. This is a first paragraph. This is a first paragraph.
This is a second paragraph. This is a second
paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This
is a second paragraph.This is a second paragraph.This
is a second paragraph. This is a second paragraph. This
is a second paragraph.
These things persisted despite clear formatting guidelines in the forum rules.

***

I do intend to change the feature to provide more user-friendly ways for established users who follow the rules to not run into a problems with the automatic single line removal or other automatic filters.
