Automatic loss of proposed posting if not saved or submitted

Post by H2ouse »

This suggestion is for all forums -- it has to do with the way that new postings are handled in our browsers.

I have found that if I leave a posting I am currently working on so I can refer to some other part of the forum, my work is lost. I have to remember to save it as a draft first. Being an absent minded type of guy, this does not always happen. Could a routine not be added whereby any move to leave a posting which is being composed first triggers a message reminding us of the fact that the work will be lost, and offering a save button with which to save it as a draft if needed.

I for one would really appreciate this. And perhaps others would, too -- philosophers are supposed to be notoriously absent minded!

Thanks for the suggestion. As far as I know, this is only issue for users of Internet Explorer. I will see if I cannot add a special Javascript prompt for people using IE who attempt to leave a posting page without submitting.

In the meantime, I highly recommend switching to a different browser than IE, assuming you are using IE. I use Firefox and it automatically saves the text I've entered into HTML forms whether I leave the page and then use the back button to get back, close the browser and the restore the session or my computer or the application crashes or turns off. There are other advantages too. Firefox is more secure I believe, and is a lot more easily customizable with add-ons and personalized tools. Also, this may no longer be the case, but last time I used IE regularly it still didn't have a in-built automatic spell check like Firefox.
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

Thanks, Scott.

Yes, IE does now offer spellcheck. But I will look into Firefox again. I think your opinion is in accord with most IT people's feelings -- I've just been OK with IE and not felt the need to change.

I'm making a separate postings about another procedural issue, which may also be unique to IE, having to do with canceling notifications about new postings.

I'm a recent user of your site, and have so far found it very provocative and interesting. Thanks.
The architectures of human languages probably contain more understanding of the universe than all the ideas of science and philosophy combined.
