Forum spelling

Post by Lighter »

Infuriates me so much, does anyone else get annoyed by this or is it just me?

Why do we need such stringency on an internet forum? I would argue that more point's are lost as a result of the spell check than gained from it.

Some one please explain it to me. It's not just spelling, its the ability to use words and structure in a way that I'm comfortable with.

Why is this a problem?

Why can not you attach anything on this forum?

And why, does it not highlight the errors that it's picking up on? Often i spellcheck a post and it's fine, yet I'm still unable to post it because it gets flagged.

Someone please explain.

Please see this post for an explanation of the forum rules regarding proofreading posts and using a spellchecker. If none of the items required to be removed during proofreading -- and proofreading is a requirement -- is present, AND your spellchecker does not pick up any errors, and the post is still rejected, this is probably an error. Please copy and paste the post -- which has been proofread for each and very one of the errors listed in the linked post and has been spellchecked and is still being rejected -- in this topic, in another topic in the feedback section or in a PM to me. Please note, it will not be blocked when posting in the feedback section or in a PM.

Until I had this automatic block, I would have to spend hours a day sifting through all the junk rule-breaking posts, making deletes and warning users and then banning them over something as petty as not proofreading. I greatly prefer this new automated system as a way of letting new members understand that this is not some regular old online chat forum, but is a special forum for intelligent, intellectual debate made up of well-thought-out, carefully constructed posts which is moderated with a strict elaborate set of rules the absence of which makes this kind of productive debate impossible on most public online settings.

It doesn't highlight the specific spelling/grammar errors because the point is that the user needs to proofread and spellcheck all their posts on their own. The system isn't as strict as a real spelling and grammar checker and isn't meant to be used as one. It's meant to detect when a post has not been properly proofread and spellchecked without generating any false positives. If there is a false positive, i.e. a post that has been properly proofread and passed a real spellcheck but is still blocked, then I need to be notified with specifics so that I can fix that problem.

Thanks! Scott

Obviously I am in favor of carefully constructed posts, and if your system provided this then perhaps I’d see your point more. Yet why are post’s containing things such as the following

“Men are pig’s”

“Anyone over 25 who has sex with a 16 year old is a pervert”

And

The USA has a responsibility to spread civilization like they did in Iraq

Present on the forum? And this is all within one topic! Here is a link – http://onlinephilosophyclub.com/forums/ ... 576#p87829

I would like to hear your thoughts please Scott.

Thank you

These new questions seem to be a different issue than spelling and proofreading for basic grammar and coherence. Nonetheless, I think this post will answer these followup questions.
