Feedback: invisible quotes

Post by James195101 »

When I choose the option to look at all my posts, the quotes get removed. Hence when some-one has a look at some-one else's posts using the all option, they get an untrue picture of the person. For example, I included a quote from a person who started 'I am a Christian'. It looks like I have written this. Why not keep the quotes.

The problem with parsing quotes, or any bbcode, in the search results is that it may be cutoff since only part of the message is displayed. I have modified the search to remove quotes from search results, except when the entire post with parsed quotes is small enough to be displayed with parsed quotes. Please let me know if this work well or if there is any errors. In any case, thank you for this feedback and the suggestion. I think the search results are a lot more user-friendly now.

Yes, the HIDDEN QUOTE was a great improvement. Unfortunately about one in five got mixed up i.e. some of the text was a quote, but it was not shown as a quote. QUOTE NOT SHOWN may be a better text than HIDDEN QUOTE. Ideally quotes would always be removed (except of course when you 'jump to post').

I notice there is ambiguity using the word quote. In my first post I meant 'quote marks'. Although I do like the 'not shown or hidden' quotes, it would also be OK if the ' " Scott wrote: ... ' were included, so long as it was clear what was a quote. This would probably be better than having the mix of 'hidden quote' and some errors.

Which posts exactly are displaying in the search results with quotes still not being shown as hidden or formatted into a quote box?

Going to James195101 and clicking 'view all', the ones with errors are: post 398 Why Atheism Cannot Be Logically Supported, post 23 Lazarus stole Jesus's body and put it in his tomb, post 342 Why Atheism Cannot Be Logically Supported, post 17 Split from: Is faith synonymous with self-delusion?. There seems to be a lot less 'errors' now. I still prefer QUOTE NOT SHOWN as HIDDEN can spark 'big brother' paranoid feelings in some of us.

Okay, I found my error. The code I wrote wasn't picking up quotes that had other bbcode in them, such as italic text. I have fixed it, and it should be working now with the possible exception of nested quotes. However, I plan to deal with nested quotes a different way sometime in the near future, maybe by having them automatically reordered as non-nested quotes.

I found some others with 'error': post 87 Characteristics of God, post 342 Why Atheism Cannot Be Logically Supported, post 330 Why Atheism Cannot Be Logically Supported, post 337 Why Atheism Cannot Be Logically Supported, post 10 Lazarus stole Jesus's body and put it in his tomb, post 330 Why Atheism Cannot Be Logically Supported, post 71 Definitions of 'God', post 379 I'm a Theist, Please Challenge Me!. Not sure if I missed these before nor why post 330 came up twice.

Looks good, except for two nested ones. What about automatically dropping out quotes when quoting - perhaps inserting HIDDEN QUOTE. This would stop some ugly constructs. Are you considering QUOTE NOT SHOWN?

I have just now changed it so that nested quotes will automatically be deleted. For instance:

Code: Select all

[quote="Joe"][quote="Mary"]Hi, I'm Mary. Who are you?[/quote]
I'm Joe and I like Joey things.[/quote]
Your text.
The above code will be changed to display as:
Joe wrote: I'm Joe and I like Joey things.
Your text.

This change will be especially useful for when people use the quote button, which is from where most deeply nested quotes needlessly come. If for any reason you find it useful to include a past quote in a series, you can do so manually with the following type of code:

Code: Select all

[quote="Mary"]Hi, I'm Mary. Who are you?[/quote]
[quote="Joe"]I'm Joe and I like Joey things.[/quote]
Your text.
The above will display as the following:
Mary wrote:Hi, I'm Mary. Who are you?
Joe wrote:I'm Joe and I like Joey things.
Your text.

***

I think this is a great improvement because the nested quotes were getting out of hand both aesthetically and to parse on the back-end. This seems to me to be the most user-friendly approach to getting rid of nested quotes.

This still means old nested quotes won't be hidden properly on search results posts. I hope to fix that some time, either by editing the structure of the quotes in those posts somehow or by improving the code I've written to hide the quotes on the search page to deal with nested quotes, probably the former.

James195101, I have changed it to (quote not shown) as suggested.

Hi Scott, this still doesn't seem to be working quite right with nested quotes in the user profile search list.

For example, in my list of posts (accessed via my profile) there is one dated January 13th, 2014, 8:09 am in which the quote has been removed and my post seems to start with "You are being disingenuous". That was not my statement, it was a phrase that I was responding to. It was part of the nested quote which displays correctly in the full forum post.

This problem seems to occur with all the posts where I have used nested quotes, which is quite often. It would make more sense if the full nest was removed in the search list, and the words shown were all mine not a quote.

Incidentally, this isn't important, but there is also a discrepancy between the number of posts shown in my profile (6) and the number in the search (7). This doesn't appear to be due to the fact that I followed up one of my own posts, as that would make an 8th.

Yes, I recently made a change to allow a single nested quote, such that only quotes nested within a nested quote would be removed. But the code I used to hide quotes in the search results wasn't designed to deal with nested quotes since I made it when nested quotes weren't allowed at all. I will have to update it.

Okay, I think I fixed this. Quotes with a nest quote should be fully removed from search results now.
