Proposal for a Philosophy of Language poll

Post by Philobot »

In 2009 there was a poll on the idea to create a new forum for Philosophy of Science, a forum which is now in existence. Are people who specialized in Philosophy of Language supposed to post in that? Since I would not think this appropriate I propose to apply some direct democracy and do a poll on the question "Could we get a Philosophy of Language Subforum?"* While it seems that you, Scott, do not support that (despite your claim in 2009 that you "will probably add a section like that soon"), and you may have your reasons, maybe a majority would want it anyway. At least there seems to be a fair amount of support and then it might be good thing to do it even if you oppose. No?

What some of the supportive voices say:

"I think it would serve as a good "concentration point" of precise thinking that we could all benefit from. Better yet, perhaps a subforum devoted to "analytic philosophy" might be good as well. I just think it would be nice to have a place where thinkers of the "scientific" or "precise" trend could gather to talk." by Ophiuchus

"These forums are in desperate need of language philosophy section." by EMTe

"Logic is a pretty big area of philosophy, I think deserving of its own section on the forums. It could also be incorporated with the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mathematics." by mickalos

I do recognize that there might be a downside to the idea of separating different minds as it might hamper the "creative clash of difference" so to say. But I think there will be enough of that anyways in "general philosophy", and also it did not do any harm with the other subforums so far.

All threads on the topic have been removed to the "memory hole" (feedback section) of this forum. You might have a look there if it interests you what happened so far.

*it would also be interesting to see if user participation has 'evolved' in the last 3 years. I expect participation to be better than the 6 votes in 2009, even during summer break.

There have also been proposals to create a forum(s) for the continental tradition and/or analytic tradition, which might also mean creating a forum for other traditions, namely those associated more with Eastern philosophy than Western. Of course, philosophy of language is only considered a field by the analytic tradition and NOT the continental tradition, and so I think it would make sense to not make both a forum for the analytic tradition and a forum for philosophy of language.

Also, there have been suggestions for forums for philosophy of mathematics and/or logic.

Before we create a poll regarding creating more forums/sub-forums, I'd want a more specific plan for creating these forums.

One idea I've had is creating a special, quasi-private subforum for each different tradition. Each member would only be able to select one tradition, and would be granted special access to that forum. Maybe everyone could reply in that forum but only members of that tradition could create the topics; or maybe it could be vice versa to allow questions from non-members of the tradition but keep the replies and discussion isolated to members of that tradition. Alternatively, only members of the tradition could post in the forum, and everyone else would only be able to read it. Yet another alternative is of course to just let anyone post in any tradition's subforum.
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

General philosophy does not branch off into analytical and continental philosophy an then into the different subcategories. I know you do not like Wikipedia but its system to classify Philosophy makes much more sense than a differentiation between analytical and continental can ever make. It is like this:

PHILOSOPHY

Epistemology
Logic
Metaphysics
Moral and political philosophy
Aesthetics
Specialized branches

Specialized branches consist of:

Philosophy of language
Philosophy of law
Philosophy of mind
Philosophy of religion
Philosophy of science

Where is the analytical/continental differentiation in that? There is none.

The differentiation between continental and analytic is a ahistorical/quasi-geographic/political differentiation which cannot be applied to classical philosophy. Therefore, it is not helpful at all to classify a philosophy which has a 3000 year history and is not only a fashion of the 20th century. Contrary to that, philosophy of language IS a helpful category.

PS: I think that a 'quasi-private subforum' would not work very well.

Wikipedia is not a credible source.
