Log-In Bug

Post by Quotidian »

I have noticed that if I arrive at the forum without logging in, then reply to a thread, it presents the Reply To box, and allows me to enter text. However then, when I submit, it presents the Log-in screen. After logging in, whatever text I had entered in the prior screen is lost. I have done this a couple of times. I suggest an update, so that either the system remembers the entered text while it logs you in, or it does not allow you to enter text until your logged in, so as to avoid deletion of text that you have already entered.

I came here Quotidian thinking you were going to share an old story about a log with a bug in it. It turns out that this bug is not the insectvariety and I probably should read where a post is when I open the latest posts thingon the home page. Mind you there was no bug for me in my log.

well I did post it in 'feedback and announcements' intentionally....:-)

actually this might be a browser issue. I get different behaviours in other browsers and operating systems. The problem occured for me on Safari on Mac OS 10.6.8. Doesn't do the same thing using Firefox on Win 7.

there is definitely a bug with Mac OS and safari. Even when you're logged in, you hit SUBMIT, and it will ask you to log in again, and dump your text.

Tedious.

It is a problem with Safari 5.1.5 on Mac OS. You will be logged in, enter a reply, then hit SUBMIT, and you will return to the log-in screen, with all your text gone. Be warned.

You won't be brought to the posting box if not logged in. It sounds like Safari is remembering your session temporarily but then somehow the session is being lost/destroyed when/while you browse the posting box screen. I will have to do some testing and research to figure out why this is happening in Safari and if there is something I can do server-side to prevent this problem.

I find it odd that Safari doesn't save your text, though. If something like that happens in Firefox or Chrome, I am able to just hit the back button and all my text is there just as I left it. Same thing if my computer crashes or I accidentally close the browser.
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

This still happens in Safari. I have tried to go back to just using one browser, but both at home (iMac, Mac OS 10.6.8 ) and at work (Win 7), there are particular things that don't work on particular browsers, so I have to use two browsers on the Mac and three on the Windows machine. Just one of those annoying facts of cyber-life. So I am back to posting here with Firefox (which, for some reason, has a terrible PDF reader plug in.........)
