Introducing Myself!

Post by Sarahfloria »

Hello strangers! My name is Sarah and I am going into my 3rd year as a philosophy/psych student in Ontario, Canada. I stumbled upon this website when I googled philosophy forums.

I was just looking for something to fill my time in the summer until I am back in school to fill my philosophical discussion quota. I love philosophy but find myself straying away from it out of boredom at times so I thought this would be a good place to practice it. I want to get something out of this forum experience but I can see myself getting distracted some more.

Some other interests of mine are running, weight lifting, writing and comedy.

I'm hoping to get to know some cool people and get down to brass tacks and talk philosophy!

It's the distractions that make life bearable, but then I do have a very short attention span.

Welcome, Sarah.

I Hope you'll find some useful discussions here. If you're in third year you must have already done Ethics 101 etc. If ethics interests you there are some ethics topics I'd love to discuss with someone like you who has a college grounding in it and who must have engaged with the literature to some extent. For example, I'd like to discuss the realism anti-realism issue- whether there are moral facts that we can be right or wrong about or whether the non-cognitivists' or error theorists' arguments are more plausible.

Cheers

Is it obligatory, in this thread, to keep repeating oneself, to keep repeating oneself?

Well, seeing as this is your thread I suppose you can make the rules.

I can see there may be reasons for doing weight lifting but in what way is it possible to be interested in it?

I suppose it's not the act of lifting weights that I enjoy, but perhaps the science and technique behind it. I always find myself researching new workouts, new ways to lift weights, new diets, new regimes, blah blah blah. I find it interesting. I like being strong and having muscles, although I am not quite too sure where that love stemmed from. I'm sure some psychologists could have a field day with that statement.

I had no idea there was any more to it than grabbing hold of the weight and hoisting it up into the air. I suppose it illustrates the tendency to just dismiss or write off the things we have never taken the time to pay much attention to. It makes you wonder how many things in life you are missing out on, for the lack of looking a bit more deeply.
