Like minded people!

Post by Debstr518 »

Good Afternoon,

Debra Strandlie here. I am a philosophy and mathematics major at MNSU in Minnesota. I happened upon this forum while I was looking for somewhere to chat about philosophy. I don't enjoy the company of many people lately, dealing with fun anxiety and what not. I'm generally well adjusted to social interactions, but the availability of philosophical discussions with substance has been difficult to find. Hopefully this place will provide a creative and rational outlet for me.

I am currently reading the Critique of Pure Reason and would like people to discuss such with me! I have read it before and its to say the least, difficult. I'd be happy to discuss any philosophical topic! My favorite is on animal ethics as my senior thesis dealt with the unethical captivity of Killer Whales.

Hope all is well with each of you, and I look forwards to discussion!

Thanks!

Debra

Welcome, Debra. In my opinion "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" is difficult read because it patently makes no sense. Immanuel Kant never developed his idea, because, between you and me, his thoughts were leading him down an intellectual cul-de-sac. All moral philosophers were doomed when they tried to find the truth behind the inevitably present ethical nature of man, before the advent of evolutionary psychology.

Erm... what is it that you object to? Killers belong in prisons. Or do you support capital punishment as a viable punitive alternative to mete out to known killers?

A different question... do you consider Killer Whales at par with Killer England or Killer Scotland?

These are the REAL questions real philosophers ought to examine, methinks.
Ignorance is power.

I have paid my dues. I agree, it is not easy reading, but then again, much of philosophy is not. Why that is the case is an interesting question. I think Kant is enormously important with regard to the subjectivity of knowledge but although I am a strong proponent of reading and interpreting primary texts, in the case of Kant, as opposed to say Plato, I am not convinced that reading him offers much more than reading the secondary literature on him. But the case can be made that if one is to be a serious student of philosophy it is necessary to pay one’s dues.

Any particular questions or issues you would like to discuss?
