Does anyone have personal suggestions? And, are there any links online where I can self-educate?

This is meaningful to me as I do not want to take improper steps.

It sounds like you are on the right track. I would probably read through a bit of Plato. He is easy enough to read, highly important in the history of philosophy, and fun. I would also try and read through some introductory books to metaphysics and the like so that you get a good overview of the basic positions in philosophy. Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy is also a nice read with a tonne of information. Also, have you heard of the podcast History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps? An amazing podcast series that not just introduces thinkers, it jumps into some decent depth of the thought.
