Introducing myself

Post by BruceD »

Hi, I've been reading and discussing various views on Free Will for a couple years(?) now. The view that I believe to be true is called "Hard Determinism."

What I hope to find is some people who would like to explore the ramifications of various Free Will beliefs. I've been participating in the Imdb Philosophy forum but it is extremely low-attended. I've started a few threads there hoping to stimulate some "speculation" on the ramifications of those free will views, but almost no one stays on topic. They simply take it as another thread in which to argue for or against one of the several flavors of "Free Will".

Some topics I'd like to discuss...
  • * How would the world/society be different if everyone believed there was no free will? * Are people and society better off believing there is free will? * How has your life changed since "learning" that there is no free will? * I'd like to find a succinct, yet adequate definition of Compatibilism; and to learn more about Compatibilism. I may be enticed into an argument in this area. * What was the primary influence that caused you to believe whatever you believe regarding free will?
(guess I need to learn how to do a list... Read about lists and now tried the asterisk"*". however, I'm still failing. Can someone help?)

I'm no longer that interested in discussing whether or not we have free will. I think I've seen all the arguments, but maybe not. You never know.

Have you participated in "What exactly is Free Will" under Religion? I think it is a place to discuss your questions.

Hi Misty, Thanks for responding. I tried to search on "free will" but was completely unable to do it. Tried several approaches but failed every time because the words were too common. Can you tell me how to do it?

In the meantime, I'll look at the thread you suggested.

Thanks, Bruce

Hello Bruce,

Click on to 'search' above and to the right of the title Philosophy Forums. Then type in free will in the first space for searching. There is the list of all the free will posts.

Under the Main Philosophy Forum go to Philosophy of Religion, there is a list of topics, you will find the 'What exactly is Free Will' topic. If it is not what you expect you can start a new topic.

I hope this helps.

Hi Misty, Above and to the right of the title I found both an empty search field, and below it there's a button that says "search". Filling in the field failed just as I have before. Clicking on the search button took me to an advanced search page which has also failed me already. I always get the message: "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: free will. You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards."

I used the "Google" search option and found individual posts but that's very unsatisfactory as it finds all the posts, not the threads.

Hi BruceD, Look at the top of this page. On the right there is Forum Home - Philosophy Club - Wiki - Search - Register - Login-----Click onto search. Then the first place to enter type in free will.....it works for me. Misty

Hi Misty, thanks again. The field you describe is the Google search option I had tried. It finds posts -- but many of them are in the same thread. It doesn't search on topics. Or maybe there's a more advanced way to use it?

Take care, Bruce

Hi Bruce, I would certainly like to read and contribute if I can to any discussions on the implications of Free Will or determinism. Also I have long been dissatisfied with all explanations of compatibilism as they all fall down the plughole of voluntarism.

I urge you to begin :) .
