I was wondering if anyone could help me source this quote. I thought it was from Augustine of Hippo's 'City of God', book IV.
"In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organised brigandage"
Can anyone tell me if this is right or wrong? I would soo appreciate it, and be very impressed at the same time. Rather desperate! |

Hope this helps:
"Read IV.3,15. Like Plato and Aristotle, Augustine was no admirer of militarism or empire. Peace is one of his favourite themes. The question, "In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organised brigandage?", and the story of Alexander and the pirate, were often repeated by later writers."

How can a question be right or wrong?
I agree with St. Augustine's point, for which I had already made a thread: Pirates and Emperors: Does size matter?
Moderation note: I am closing this thread since the source of the quote was confirmed as asked and the other part of the thread is a duplicate of another thread. _________________ Online Philosophy Club - Please tell me how to improve this website! |
