Yes, as we know, that was a commonly held attitude towards anything associated with sex. Thankfully, the world is slowly changing. There may be many pros and cons to the modern liberal world. But attitudes towards sex that are getting gradually healthier and more open are, it seems to me, definitely on the "pro" side.SMUK44 wrote:I was told repeatedly while growing up that my penis was "dirty" and that my skin was dirty. I think at the time I interpreted that as hygiene but as I got older I think I understood that it was the other definition of dirty that was being referred to. It was equated with the concept of "sin" many times.

I think there is more to the practice of body mutilation than prudishness. It's to do with control. The sexual urge is too Dionysian for the authoritarian purpose of Jehovah.
Apollo represents harmony, progress, clarity, logic and the principle of individuation, whereas Dionysus represents disorder, intoxication, emotion, ecstasy and unity (hence the omission of the principle of individuation).

The sense of guilt is slightly effective for inhibiting sexual activities, and cutting off bits of people's bodies is probably slightly effective too.

My family are definitely religious. I guess what you say about control makes sense in that context.

I am glad you have engaged with the Apollonian/Dionysian model to explain human behaviour.SMUK44 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2021, 1:42 amBelindi wrote: ↑October 25th, 2021, 1:34 pm Prudishness about masturbation and genitals ( e.g. "dirty") may be a way in which very compliant religionists make sense of preachings about sexual continence when people live in overcrowded houses. It is odd that America which is renowned for individualism and passion; is also known to harbour so many families who choose to comply with authoritarian versions of traditional religions which like religious authority everywhere seeks to control people's individualism and channel their passions into the mould that shaped the man who heads some church.
