There are a few sides to this. Obviously in terms of cooperation it is important that I don't lie. In this way I am fully predictable and thus can be worked with perfectly to the betterment of all.My current view on lying in this context is that it's not beneficial for the race as a whole. In order to survive we need to cooperate, and lies will become an impediment.
However any individual could massively exploit my honesty. I would in fact be killing myself to lie in certain situations. So the possibility to lie is important. The ability to be unpredictable is vital.
To go further though. Even two parties who never lie and have good intentions still won't necessarily cooperate. Many evils have been done due to a simple misunderstanding of reality. And what process is there in place to ensure that we are acting in accordance with reality? Again it becomes key to lie in the face of insanity.
Having said all that, in the perfect world there would be no need for lies. Now we will never be perfect but we can be more perfect. In this sense it makes sense not to lie for the most part and to wish that no lies were necessary.
