I don't disagree with you that I worded it awkwardly. If all the actions in the world were put on a spectrum with extreme goodness on one end and extreme badness on the other. The statistical average many would call neutral. Anything above neutral could be called more good than neutral or "good" thus anything below neutral could similarly be called "bad". In this scenario there must be an equal amount of goodness and badness.popeye1945 wrote: ↑February 9th, 2021, 12:50 am Lucky, Could you expand upon that last statement, or perhaps reword it, it presently makes no sense to me.

No.
What is good or bad is a matter of opinion.
Good is what is pleasing, bad is that which is not.
SO the amounts of good and bad would depend on two things;
1) The degree to which you are personally optimistic or pessimistic.
2) The actual life experience you lead.

You're missing the point that good and bad are subjective as Sculpture noted. Think of beautiful and ugly. If you judged 100 faces on the beauty scale, number 50 would be neutral and 51 to 100 as a group could be called beautiful and 1 to 49 could be called ugly. It isn't about universal meaningfulness it's about statistics.popeye1945 wrote: ↑February 10th, 2021, 7:10 am The physical world just is, meaningless. Do you believe that the world is that orderly fifty-fifty, nothing is fifty-fifty? What is good and bad is what is life-sustaining and that which is bad and harmful to life.

Lucky, Your quite right, this is an area of subjective judgement, of course, that is the only kind of judgement there is. This doesn't mean that anything of an objective nature has an equal balance of good and bad even statistically. It just wouldn't hold up. You might once in awhile briefly approach a mean reading close to an equality, rare and temporal.LuckyR wrote: ↑February 11th, 2021, 3:24 amYou're missing the point that good and bad are subjective as Sculpture noted. I just can't see this. You've simply advanced your feeling for what good and bad might mean, and gone on from there. What's good for me is bad for you, and so on (and on, and...). Goodness and badness are not intrinsic to external things, they're created in the mind of the observer. So quantities of good and bad, as the topic title reflects, are essentially meaningless, yes?popeye1945 wrote: ↑February 10th, 2021, 7:10 am What is good and bad is what is life-sustaining and that which is bad and harmful to life.

On an even wider spectrum, what is good or bad for humans probably seems very different to the zillions of non-human species we 'share' this world with. The high-velocity round that will kill an endangered tiger will probably kill a near-extinct rhino. Good and bad. For philosophical purposes, these words have no useful function (except perhaps in the most general of discussions). ... Oh, I'm supposed to say "IMO" here, aren't I?popeye1945 wrote: ↑February 12th, 2021, 5:29 pm On a wider spectrum, what is good and bad for us has a common foundation, our common biology, what will kill one person, will probably kill another.
