Metaphysical Repression

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

I don't feel I can respond to such vague mysticism. Sorry.
Yes, this is the problem for the young ones that results in metaphysical repression. I know because I was one who felt the common sense of metaphysics due to heredity. I'm not a visual artist but one of my ancestors had few peers in the ability to depict awe and the interactions of elemental forces. I must have inherited some of what he understood. I know what these kids are going through even though my influences allow me to see through it.

Jacob Needleman advised:
As to how I would guide someone who is confused about the idea of God, I would suggest that he or she begins identifying what one might called "philosophical friends," - people with whom one could seriously examine our thought about God through listening to each other, reading important and useful books together and trying to think for oneself while familiarizing oneself with the ideas of some of the world's great thinkers. Cultivate openness without gullibility and skepticism without cynicism.
The first thing to realize is that the world resides in the darkness of Plato's cave. If you feel there is intelligence greater than Man you are quite right so there is no need to repress what you have sensed. Allow your mind to open. But the problem is finding others who have felt the same. They also hide. If some do exist in education or within secular religion you will have to sense them and they will sense you.

But beware of the charlatans who take advantage of those in need. They are spiritual con artists so don't trust. Instead verify. What you have sensed is not a weakness but actually a strength and the world may need your awakening influence in the future for Man's quest to feel objective human meaning and purpose.

When I said "I don't feel I can respond to such vague mysticism", I meant that I don't know how to respond while maintaining due courtesy and respect for your personal religious beliefs. I didn't ask for religious advice or guidance from you. To be honest, I feel your preaching shows a lack of respect for my own religious beliefs, which are quite different from your own.

This topic is an exercise in dishonesty, in the sense that its topic is religious, but the religious element is dishonestly withheld, apparently for evangelical purposes. I feel cheated that a topic apparently discussing one of my favourite topics proves to be a sham. I think we are done here. Thanks for the chat.

My answer was not addressed to you since you had left. It was addressed at the young suffering metaphysical repression.

Where is the preaching? "Who am I" and "Why am I here" are basic philosophical questions and any of the young who feel them without being indoctrinated into naive concepts of social justice will be ridiculed. Some of the young inwardly free enough not to join in mobs and break windows while destroying the hard work of others will be criticized as not caring. And yet to support this minority who has yet to be indoctrinated but needs to feel meaning is considered preaching. If philosophy isn't dead yet it is on the decline. Welcome to the woke Age and we'll drink to social justice while some kid sits in the back and wonders why people don't see that the emperor has no clothes. Someone has to support this kid especially since drugs serving the need for escapism from absurdity is so tempting.

You are right. We are done here.

In the secular world "metaphysics" (I prefer the phrase spiritual truths) are repressed in academia and in the mass media.
Those who are really spiritual will be drawn to religion, philosophy or mysticism.
This is the current battle between religion and science/secularism. A problem I do see is that though religions offer some framework and good symbolism,it lacks coherence and has soo much dogma and ritualism. Philosophy also has this problem,as illustrated in this thread alone. The reliance on plato is a mistake. There are mystics, and there are mystics! Plato was a mystic who wanted an elite to control and direct society ( just like organised religions and secularists) through indoctrination. That's is the not the kind of mystic who encourages freedom and personal experience. Metaphysics basically is the call to reality based on personal psychological experience. A personal expression of truth. Its not going to be taught in secular or religious schools. It is expressed in close personal relationships.
It's each individuals responsibility, not government or Insituations.
Government mysticism! What an oxymoron!
