Yes.
That you even ask baffles me. The publicity that our ecosystem has received over your lifetime has achieved nothing? Or are you playing devil's advocate? Your question is equivalent to asking why we don't rip the engines out of our cars, to make more room for passengers. And the answer is the same for both questions.

Helicopters were designed to mimic dragonfly abilities. Pharmaceutical scientists study moss and fungai to provide enzymes to help with digestive problems.
Destroying the wildlife would be akin burning the books in the library (before there was internet).
Human beings tend to be self destructive especially when disconnected from the reality of the natural world.

Everything is zero-sum. We do not destroy or create; only remix things.
Is it not true that the current path is the best one, if for no other reason than all the other paths do not exist.

"Need" implies purpose. Need for what purpose? If the purpose you're talking about is the continued physical survival of the human race, and only that, then we probably don't need them. In principle, a large amount of non-human wildlife could indeed be replaced by artificial human-made mechanisms, such as the one you described, without the human race going extinct as a result.Evolution25 wrote:Why do we need wildlife animals or even insects?
Because we don't want to.Do you think we will slowly eliminate all wildlife? And why shouldn't we?

It is not possible for a completely artificial biome to sustain humans in the long term.Evolution25 wrote: ↑May 22nd, 2021, 7:28 am Why do we need wildlife animals or even insects? What if we just destroy their habitats and make way for more houses, roads, gas pipelines etc. since that will advance human civilization further. So insects and animals contribute to our ecosystem example bees help with pollination of plants and crops, but can't we just rely on AI and robots in the future like artificial pollinators? And in the future we can build artificial trees that will suck in co2 in the air. Do you think we will slowly eliminate all wildlife? And why shouldn't we?
Trying to continue to make one, will not lead to the advance of human civilisation.
Already our artificial environments have meant the end of Natural Selection.
The natural enviroment is part of a highly complex set of interactions for which we rely on a large number of things which are not obvious, such as the maintenance of our gut bacteria, without which we could not digest ordinary food; and on the acquisition of micro-nutrients which are easier to obtain through natural means than by artificial ones.

People do the same thing on these boards constantly--with philosophical topics, other science-oriented topics, etc. On the one hand, they seem like they are reasonably intelligent, as if they must have had a decent education, etc., but then something about what they say will indicate such a profound ignorance about what they're asking about that it seems unbelievable that they'd even be able to tie their own shoes/feed themselves. You think, "How could they possibly have avoided all knowledge/awareness of this yet be as educated as they apparently are?" It's a weird contradiction that evidences time after time. It's something that makes these boards very frustrating, especially because there also seems to be some sort of block or resistance to educating the person about what they're so profoundly ignorant about, so it becomes a series of "talking to the wall" back and forths until one or the other person just decides to give up.Pattern-chaser wrote: ↑May 23rd, 2021, 8:23 amYes.
