Failed Gods

Post by Skyblack »

If one can put aside the garbage of acquired knowledge, and the blankets of shoddily put second hand intellection of a corrupt mind, then one may define gods simply, as the things we value most.

Having been let down by the gods of youth, health, wealth, recognition, relationship, friendship, love etc., the broken human with a shoddy and corrupt mind steeped in poisonous cunningness (which is most of humanity), then goes on a quest to find other gods.

In this quest he or she collects all the information they can on/of the various available gods, and then, decides on the one that suits his or own system, conditioning, experiences, and bias. It could be a belief on a religious god, it could be a more secular god as science (the newest god in the block), or some minor god of philosophy. It could be the permanent gods of fancied imaginations, or it could be the ever changing gods of knowledge. It could be a god of 'belief', or it could be a god of 'experience'. So on and so forth…

It seems, if one has gone deep into the matter, this search for security in gods (secular or religious), these gods which may take various forms such as intellection, deities, ideas, knowledge, possessions, entertainment, etc., is a search for an all perfect miraculous drug which will ease an underlying pain.

The underlying pain may be a feeling of emptiness, a feeling of meaninglessness to it all (thus searching for meaning) etc. Thus this search to find a perfect drug that will soothe the underlying internal sorrow is an escape from facts, from what is.

If the observer has come thus far, working on their own ( not second hand shoddily put intellection of a corrupt mind), and has an expereintial insight into the complete map, then the question confronting the observer is, can the entire loop be dropped. Can observation be washed of the observer, the observer being the essence of the loop, the essence of the corruption.

However, since the observer is afraid of its own death (psychological of physical) and wants the pleasure of continuity, thus afraid of non-existence/FOMO….it doesn’t know how to face these burning questions, but would rather escape into some comforting theories, some comforting beliefs, some comforting ideas, some comforting drug, or engage in distraction by intellectual entertainment etc.

To continue a bit on what was said in OP:

One may ask a question, how does a lover of wisdom, concerned with his or her own life/living (not looking at the lives of others) address the problems laid out in the OP. Can they approach it from/through their knowledge? Obviously no, since knowledge has been proven to fall short, inadequate to meet these realities. If knowledge could have help resolved the conundrum it would already have. But, we are where we are.

To look at this conundrum one would like to draw upon some pointers from my previous thread which is this viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17414 . Drawing from that thread one gets a hint on how to approach existential issues like these. One will need an innocent mind. An innocent mind that isn't looking either from dead knowledge, or through the psychological scars of yester years. A mind which isn't conflicted as it sees facts, does not escape from what is, and is thus unbiased. Such a mind knows that it doesn’t know and can remain in the unknowing, therefore innocent. It's a questioning mind that isn't seeking an easy and quick answer. The innocent mind is now free (freedom) to look and to investigate.

For the sheer, arrogant irresistibility, for the comforting blanket of intellection, for the soothing of underlying pain, for a new oracle. How would other s feel about starting a new cult?

A tempting offer, but I think I'll stick with my 'minor god of philosophy'. He doesn't do much in the way of miracles, but he has the distinct advantage, rare among gods of any stripe, of allowing me to think my own thoughts.
Philosophy is a waste of time. But then, so is most of life.

Some people just seem to enjoy the abuse.
