p.s. I tried to find a more impartial site talking about "click-farming", but all I found was a Bloomberg article(^) that can't be accessed without paying. I do have a prejudice to believing that the Chinese government among many others would be eager to try this kind of manipulation to advance their views.
I tried to check on Snopes, but only got related ideas about bots:

I do believe that the Chinese, Russians, and many other governments are manipulating social media. I believe there are lots of bots operating both for propaganda or profit motives coming from all sides. And I certainly see that cancel culture is a real thing being used by all sides to crush opposing views by a sort of blackmail ("delete" this person whose views we don't like or we will not buy your product). But this is not an easy subject to research objectively, or even to gather information about.
