Re: What is essential to being a human being?
The whole point of imitating consciousness is to be realistic. Still, nature is pragmatic and flexible, and so must be human nature. So I can imagine people deeply loving their sex robots as if they were human through anthropomorphism, a "near enough is good enough" feeling. Basically, the same phenomenon happens with childhood comfort toys and deified natural phenomena.
Or, as in the movie, Her, the AI was non-physical and acted as a mental comfort toy, masquerading as an intimate personal relationship. Humans tend to take comfort where they find it, which makes sense in an evolutionary sense.

So what? Philosophy is one thing, but Capitalist undertakings in the mythical and frightening world we call "reality" fail to get me excited, I'm afraid. If intuition has merit — and I think it does — it has nothing at all to do with researchers obtaining funding for their projects.

If there's no funding then there's no research, then there's no increase of knowledge. Don't let your antipathy towards capitalists obscure the fact that they are necessary to make progress in some of the areas debated here.Pattern-chaser wrote: ↑July 10th, 2022, 7:18 amSo what?
