If you knew everything, could you know anything?

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

If you knew everything, could you know anything?

When we philosophise in our minds and with one another [let us say], we are trying to work something out that we don’t know. Our intellect works because it is having to figure out stuff it doesn’t know. If then, you know everything, you wouldn’t be trying to understand anything ~ and wouldn’t be intelligent.

You establish no constraints or limits, so I will assume you know everything about everything. Everything about the entire universe, that is. For a start, you must have a rather large store to keep all that knowledge in, but let's pass over that.

The universe is dynamic; constantly changing. So what you know is continuously in need of updating, which might keep your intelligence occupied? Or do you know everything, across all of spacetime?

But you would remain intelligent, I think. If you had the ability to run faster than anyone, your logic might say that you no longer need your legs, but then you ... wouldn't be the fastest runner any more. Similarly, knowing everything might need you to retain your intelligence, don't you think? Not for discovery, because as you say, you know everything. But you still need to be able to apply what you know, I assume, and so I further assume that this might require intelligence?

And if you know everything, do you also have an understanding of what you know? Do you know how all the facts in your possession fit together?

I think omniscience has more consequences than we might at first think...?

Perhaps once one reaches a certain point in one's intellect, it, metaphorically, starts to ripple daily, where every day is learning condensed information regarding the max of intelligence (reformating, recognizing patterns, trying new axioms, studying from additional angles, etc), every ripple draws one closer to the end of what's possible to learn, nearing the end of all learning.

In any case, being max intelligence only voids the entertainment factor of learning, not the beneficent factor - you're still smart.

equally; ‘knowledge is in transit’ ~ if so, then you would know nothing if you knew everything. we are observing this world which as we see it, is different to what people saw in the Newtonian era.

Equally, the universe is 'in transit'; it is ever-changing. So knowing everything would involve updating what you know in the light of changes to, and within, the universe. You would be too busy with this updating to 'know nothing', as you describe it.

The state of mind is not synonymous with the state of body, you don't have to revisit a object to understand again what you know about it, but you're always aware and alert of everything you have analysed and experienced in the life system. Knowledge is like the successful keeping track of, but not in a physical sense, in a mental specific sense, everything you have analysed and experienced. Because the universe is in session there a changes occuring that provide a new unique image of all every second. Therefore, there will always be something to know harmoniously, and things will be chaotic at times and you'll be tasked to know properly.

You seem to be describing memory here, not knowledge? Or perhaps memory and knowledge, and maybe other things too? Understanding, possibly? 🤔🤔🤔

Knowledge alone, like a pressure made out of a sharp flat end of a line uneven that's back end contains the sense data of all that you have known. So you first feel like you know via the pressure point, and then understand what you know through analysis. Knowledge is a type of mental data of mind keeping track of it's analysis.
