What's the meaning of life?

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

Bridges have been built and have worked fine long before any mathematical models.
He was putting the cart before the horse.
The earth has been going round the sun long before Kepler figured it all out.
Well since advanced engineering principles existed before 2600 BCE, and the first known bridges are from about only 1500 BCE, I am not sure what type of bridges you are referring to that predated mathematical models

Ah so. That was what I was thinking about in my mind's eye. You've got to admit, other than gravity, not much (intentional) physics involved

The yanomami and pygmies of the congo have made bridges - they have no understanding of maths.

As you know your post that I commented on opined that mathematical models are less real than a god. I covered the math, still waiting for the god data.

In regards to the question at hand: What's the meaning of life?

This is the wrong question to ask...
We should be asking 'What's the purpose of life', The answer...
To create a meaningful life.

That's a purpose, not necessarily the purpose.

That's a purpose, not necessarily the purpose.
If life is not meaningful then there is no purpose, therefore the purpose is to create meaning.

Sort of depends if you are referring to: meaning or Meaning. Everyone's life has a meaning, typically lots of meanings. Others are seeking a Meaning and opinions vary dramatically if such a thing exists.

I can agree with the above.
Belindi wrote:Whose purpose? God's purpose? Or your purpose?
Surely not the illusory 'God's nor one's purpose.

What is critical is we have 4 billion years of empirical evidences of life on Earth and we can surely abstract the principles of life and meaning of life to strive for a meaningful life.
It is not only the loads of empirical evidence but that 4 billion years of evolutionary program is embedded in the human brain & body and thus one has to flow primarily and dynamically [flexibility & adaptability] with what is programmed.
Since our evolved DNA program has a 4+ billion years base, it is would be very difficult to tweak the fundamentals, so we have to live and adapt with it.

The question [another OP] is how do we abstract that basic universal principle of the meaning of life from the external [4 billion years of] empirical evidences from what is already inherent within us to make life meaningful for the individual and humanity.
Not-a-theist. Religion is a critical necessity for humanity now, but not the FUTURE.

First what do we understand when we say "life" and "the meaning of life" What happen if we don't have any meaning in our life?We must answer these questions.i think we must have a meaning in our life.Otherwise we can't live..

The question that should be asked is "what gives your life meaning"?
It is not necessary for THE purpose of life to be meaningful if the nature of the question is asking what purpose does life/living serve?
To ask, what is the purpose of life is also meaningless as it begs the question, the question ought to be rephrased as "what is the purpose of your life.
