Do you study philosophy in school?

Use this philosophy forum to discuss and debate general philosophy topics that don't fit into one of the other categories.

This forum is NOT for factual, informational or scientific questions about philosophy (e.g. "What year was Socrates born?"). Those kind of questions can be asked in the off-topic section.

Do you study philosophy in school?

Do you take philosophy classes in school? If you are out of school, did you? If you are still waiting to go to college, will you?

Why or why not?

I took Philosophy last semester, and it was one of the best courses I have ever taken. The professor really taught me to think for myself!

The closest I ever took in school to Philosophy was Bible History because that is what the teacher really talked about most of the time. The Bible History was just a side note.

I haven't been to college yet and I'm not necessarily sure I want to take a Philosophy course unless the teacher is Objectivist.

Besides, I believe that things such as philosophy should be done on one's own thought process...not taught to them. All one needs is to develop the vocabulary...and read...and think.
When a man declares: "There are no blacks and whites [in morality]" he is making a psychological confession, and what he means is: "I am unwilling to be wholly good—and please don't regard me as wholly evil!" - Ayn Rand

I would have loved to take philosophy in high school, but my high school didn't offer it. I can't afford to go to college for it.

I'm graduating in spring with a Philosophy B.A., Psychology minor and going to graduate school in either Ethical Theory or Metaphysics...haven't decided. Goal is a Doctorate and Tenure at a decent university, haha.

So, you are going to be a philosophy teacher or professor? That's cool.

Yes. My goal is to teach philosophy at a university. I would really love it.

After reading many of your posts, I am certain you will succeed in this field. You seem to have an extensive knowledge about the subject.

I took a Philosophy class in High School, but it was terrible. The teacher had absolutely no knowledge on the subject, and the students participation was practically non-existant.

The college course I took was much more beneficial. No books, no tests, just 100% discussion and debate. I learned quite a bit. Over 50% of the class dropped out of it due to being offended or frustrated, but I found it incredibly worthwhile.

Thanks! I agree. Discussion is the most important and beneficial aspect of every philosophy class i've ever taken. My favorite classes involve reading a certain text, and then coming to class and discussing it together as a class. That is the best way to learn in my opinion. Sharing thoughts and discussing with others who read the same thing you did but may have a differing interpretation or opinion.
