De-centralization of limitless free and clean energy and humanitarianism

Post by value »

In the topic Splash more soup on Van Gogh's Sunflowers? I noticed a discussion about how limitless free energy for every person on earth would be ground breaking to secure humanitarian humanity.

It's difficult to appreciate how having limitless clean energy to spend would change the equation; it would be a new phase in human existence - as different as the industrial age was from every preceding era. We'd have a future to grow into; not a cul-de-sac, but an open road ahead - a vast landscape of previously un-imagined opportunity would be opened to us.
I recently watched a passionate video of a Stanford MBA student from India that shared the insight: "Cause of poverty: there isn't enough energy to go around.".

Two recent scientific discoveries may enable two humanitarian innovations:

- limitless 100% clean and free energy
- de-centralization of the energy source

This topic is intended to discuss the potential impact of such technologies. Especially the idea of de-centralization of energy might be unconsidered and undiscussed as of today.

Invention 1: Graphene energy chip: unlimited free energy

(2020) Physicists build circuit that generates clean, limitless power from graphene
"A low cost energy-harvesting circuit based on graphene could be incorporated into a chip to provide clean, limitless, low-voltage power for small devices or sensors," said Paul Thibado, professor of physics and lead researcher in the discovery.

Invention 2: Neutrino energy chip

An invention (apparently) from Germany that is actively marketed internationally through the website https://neutrino-energy.com/

--

I haven't noticed any scientific articles on the neutrino energy chip technology however the Graphene energy chip technology appears to be feasible in the short term and has received a lot of attention from scientific journals.

The prototype chip is a 10 mm chip (the size of a coin) and produces 10 milliwatts of power (0.01 watts). Graphene is a cheap and ambundant resource that can be constructed using 3D printing technology.

A simple calculation shows its promise at scale:

1 million of the first prototype chips combined in an array would produce 10,000 watts of continuous power. The combined size of those chips may be that of a living room.

With 1 trillion chips in a large factory hall, the output would be 1 gigawatt (continuous output, also at night), similar to that of a coal-fired power plant, but free of charge during the production of energy and 100% clean.

A modern nuclear power plant produces 1 to 3 gigawatts of power and would therefore provide about the same capacity of 1 factory hall of the prototype Graphene energy chips.

The chips work underground, making it possible to realize a safe and clean energy facility deep underground under large cities that continues to work day and night.

A large mine with 1000 trillion chips produces 1 terawatt of energy, enough for entire countries. The city of London (supposedly) only needs 2 gigawatts of power.

Graphene is an economical raw material. If the chips can be mass-produced, an automated system could ensure that 1000 trillion chips work optimally at all times or be replaced by a new chip. In time, the technology would become more efficient for more power, greater reliability and lower costs.

For spacecrafts, the technology would make it possible to travel unlimited distances, while, for example, a nuclear-powered spacecraft has a limited number of life years, and can therefore only travel a limited distance. A 3D printer on the spaceship could recycle and replace defective chips so that the energy source continues to work optimally during a journey.

Because the basic material of the chips is simple (graphene comes from the material in pencils), it is probably a solution that will be more reliable in practice because the source material can be harvested in space. For example, the basic ingredient for graphene (graphite) is available and abundant on Mars.

If plans are made in the near future to send a reconnaissance vehicle to 1 billion galaxies, he graphene energy chip technology would make it possible to reach galaxies thousands of light-years away.

--

Media attention faded away

The last media articles on the technology date from 2020 (Google News). That is almost 3 years ago.

Could the technology be suppressed, for example due to the multi-trillion USD/Euro investments in nuclear fusion technology that is about to become available and is likely to have been paired with a grand political plan for semi-long term (decades long) investment recovery?

De-centralization of energy

A new concept for philosophical exploration might be the idea of de-centralization of the energy source. While today energy is provided through controlled channels, what will happen when energy is abundant and free on an individual person level?

Question: what are the possible societal implications of the availability of infinite free energy on an individual level (de-centralization of energy)?

Very difficult to say. I looked at this paper - link below, and insofar as I can understand it, it seems to suggest a very small additional effect induced as a consequence of a relatively large current transmitted through graphene.

I would say this is likely a case of sensationalist science journalism - but that would contradict your source: Paul M. Thibado. Professor of Physics at the University of Arkansas.

There are some problems here for me; firstly that the idea of free energy contradicts the second law of thermodynamics. Consequently, I'm led to suspect sensationalist science journalism. So I read a paper, and the paper seems to describe an interesting effect; but an incredibly small additional voltage induced by the transmission of a large voltage through graphene. This they attribute to Brownian motion. It doesn't actually contradict the laws of physics, but it's a microscopic effect. 0.02v induced by 45v of current. In physics terms, it's very interesting that pumping energy into graphene, you get more energy out. But real world applications... it's not a solution to the global energy/climate crisis.

Speaking of which, did you know the earth is a big ball of molten rock containing limitless amounts of heat energy, easily translated into base load electricity and clean burning hydrogen fuel? NASA proved the technology to harness this energy in 1982. Can you think of any good reason this technology hasn't been applied already?

Status of the Magma Energy Project
Dunn, J. C. (Sandia National Labs., Albuquerque, NM.)
Abstract
The current magma energy project is assessing the engineering feasibility of extracting thermal energy directly from crustal magma bodies. The estimated size of the U.S. resource (50,000 to 500,000 quads) suggests a considerable potential impact on future power generation. In a previous seven-year study, we concluded that there are no insurmountable barriers that would invalidate the magma energy concept. Several concepts for drilling, energy extraction, and materials survivability were successfully demonstrated in Kilauea Iki lava lake, Hawaii. The present program is addressing the engineering design problems associated with accessing magma bodies and extracting thermal energy for power generation. The normal stages for development of a geothermal resource are being investigated: exploration, drilling and completions, production, and surface power plant design. Current status of the engineering program and future plans are described.

Well known physicist Nassim Haramein said “This work clearly shows that stochastic thermodynamics actually carry information or has order! This is remarkable and it supports the holographic mass solution which is statistical thermodynamics inducing the coherent energy behavior that we call mass/energy.

https://www.resonancescience.org/blog/G ... -of-Energy

The researchers reported the following about their discovery: “The idea of harvesting energy from graphene is controversial because it refutes physicist Richard Feynman's well-known assertion that the thermal motion of atoms, known as Brownian motion, cannot do work. Thibado's team found that at room temperature the thermal motion of graphene does in fact induce an alternating current (AC) in a circuit, an achievement thought to be impossible.

With regard the harvesting of energy from magma. It sounds interesting but I have the following questions:
  1. How much energy would magma energy potentially provide (compared with a nuclear power plant)?
  2. Wouldn't magma energy be problematic from a global geographical perspective? Wouldn't it need an advanced and costly (to construct and maintain) infrastructure to transport energy across a country and beyond?
  3. Wouldn't magma energy be unreliable and/or risky compared to alternatives such as 1) multiple and 2) close-by power plants?
With regard your idea that limitless clean energy would solve societal problems.

The researchers specifically mentioned that the technology can be incorporated into a chip that can be used in tiny sensors. If that is the case, why wouldn't it be possible to use the technology at scale?

A robot factory and 3D printer combination can potentially manage an array of trillions of chips to provide a power plant that can compete with nuclear power in output while it has several features that could make it more usable for big cities such as the ability to put it deep underground. Also, the construction costs could become very low once the power plant management technology has matured.

Instead of a big trillion chip power plant, a matured version of the technology - if proven to last reliably for centuries without maintenance - could integrate the chips into wall isolation in homes to provide limitless free energy on a home construction level.

A standardized energy container system might allow arrays of chips of different sizes to be combined in any way for any application imaginable from mobility to utility, unlocking complete new possibilities for human life enhancement similar to LEGO for energy.

Further, low cost power chips could be mass produced and made accessible to people in countries such as Africa and India so that it could help solve societal problems. Millions of people that live in slums do not have electricity and cause major air pollution by burning scraps and plastics for energy. A de-centralized clean and free power source could improve their lives significantly.

The following passionate video of a Stanford MBA student that visited and spent the night with families in slums provides an insight into the problems.

There are 200 million people globally that live in slums that use burning scraps and plastics for energy. The air pollution that they cause not only affects the health of the people in the slums but also for all other people in nearby cities. Besides harming people it also causes untold harm to the environment and nature. The toxic fumes from the smoke lands on plants that are consumed by animals and in river water that end up in the ocean.

The true impact of toxic smoke from burning plastic for energy by 200 million people may be unknown.

In India, 1.67 million people died in 2019 as a direct result of air pollution. Many more children become severely ill and in general IQ and performance potential is decreased significantly in the general population.

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/ind ... 782066.cms

As can be seen on the Air Quality Index of India many cities in India have a PM2.5 air pollution level of 300-400 PM2.5 which is hazardous.

From a human development perspective the problem caused by burning scraps and plastics for energy might be one of the most important problems to solve since it affects the health of every person, animals, plants and nature on earth.

A de-centralized clean energy solution seems to be key to solving such a problem.

Maybe it's a consequence of the fact that I live in a city, but I do not approach this issue from the perspective of a subsistence farmer in western Africa. While that may be a virtuous endeavour, I'm looking to solve the global climate crisis; and that means producing and distributing at least, sufficient clean energy to meet global energy demand. I've looked at various technologies, wind, solar, wave, nuclear - and found them wanting in various regards, but in my view, magma/electricity/hydrogen ticks all the boxes.

Current global energy demand is around 600 quads. A quad is one quadrillion btu. NASA estimated the US magma energy resource at a minimum of 50,000 quads - 85 times global energy demand just from the US alone. Worldwide, there's thousands of times global energy demand available from magma - and we need such quantities of energy to meet the challenges ahead. Not decentralised micro-current, but a monolithic clean energy architecture.

Hydrogen can be distributed as a liquid fuel that can power hydrogen fuel cells to produce electricity. Hydrogen gas can simply be burnt for cooking. And liquid hydrogen can be used for transportation fuel in an internal combustion engine. The idea is to produce electricity from magma and connect to power grids directly where possible. At the same time produce hydrogen by electrolysis, and distribute hydrogen fuel to places beyond reach of the grid. Hydrogen can be burnt in power stations to produce electricity - turning all down stream electricity use carbon free. Or fuel cells for off-grid applications.

The infrastructure required is large but efficient. As opposed to hydro-geothermal, magma-geothermal has less risk from both environmental and investment perspectives.

Specifically on decentralisation, I take the opposite view because I do not believe we can solve the climate and ecological crisis piecemeal, or with less energy availability at greater cost. It's a matter of entropy - and the fact that any designed structure, like a civilisation - requires the expenditure of energy to maintain it. If we have less energy, and more expensive energy, particularly faced with greater challenges, things will fall apart. We will become increasingly incapable of doing what's required to meet the ongoing challenge - and civilisation will fail. Like every other energy revolution in human history - from the discovery of fire, to the agricultural revolution, to the industrial revolution - we need more energy to move forward, not less.

With regard to graphene chips I've said all I can. I don't know anything about them. I remain sceptical, but am willing to be proven wrong.

So many layers to break down here. First that comes to mind: this guy is a Stanford student, yes? I (personally) have issues with students preaching as their ideas are purely theoretical, and they have absolutely zero experience in the field, per se.

A reference that I like to use often in regard to topics such as this: if you had 100% clean energy, etc., and you installed and gave it all to the slums of the world, and everything was fixed, it would be destroyed within the week and we would end up right back to where we started, only this time trillions of dollars in the hole. For example: To "fix" the public school education system. Great. Give the system trillions of dollars overnight and guaranteed there would be zero results as they just simply don't know how to manage such an item (corruption at the top, overspending, buying useless items, etc.)

Ummm. I just posted this comment under the algae page in a different thread but I think it could apply here. I do have a "radical" thought: How about we stop having 4, 5, 6, 7+ children in the first place within a family unit that cannot put food on the table to begin with. It is not "anti-poor," but rather an objective place to begin.

I mentioned hydrogen gas for cooking, hydrogen fuel cells to produce off-grid electricity, but ultimately - the idea would be to eradicate poverty altogether. With limitless clean energy to spend those people can be brought into first world markets sustainably. It's the micro-generation approach I take issue with. It's part of a backwards approach to the whole problem - inspired by 'limits to growth' thinking. I don't believe there are limits to growth; but rather, the climate and ecological crisis is the consequence of the misapplication of technology.

Consider this; with limitless clean energy to spend it would be possible to desalinate sea water; producing fresh water to irrigate land - so giving value to currently uninhabitable and unproductive land. If there's water, land can be farmed, or built upon - and consequently, people would not need to crowd into over-populated slums. I cannot say what governments or people should do; that's their business. The right approach is to supply limitless clean energy, and let people solve their own problems.

I understand the intent to simply focus on making 'limitless clean energy' available and then allowing it to be put to use to solve 'any problem' but time is a major factor.

There may be decades of time available from several independent perspectives.

Some questions:

- How fast can a magma power plant be constructed? Is there a prototype available or is it mere theory?

- How is the energy from a magma power plant going to be distributed globally?

A de-centralized 'micro-generation approach' as you call it would make it possible to scale fast globally to solve energy related problems. If all people have the same micro energy source, it may be easy for people to hold on to and when they don't need to burn plastic and toxic waste they probably won't, so that a major environmental destruction source is abolished while in the same time it helps to transform human life's.

Well so far, it's been about 40 years - so not quickly, no! There's plenty of time for you to google the Magma Energy Project and do a little reading before it goes into full scale production. Even if you just read the abstract above, you'd learn that:

"The normal stages for development of a geothermal resource are being investigated: exploration, drilling and completions, production, and surface power plant design. Current status of the engineering program and future plans are described."

That was 40 years ago. So you tell me why this micro generation nonsense? Why spend fortunes on wind and solar to produce a trickle of clean energy? Why impose carbon taxes with one hand and give a thumbs up to fracking with the other? Why keep spending billions on fusion that has never been shown to work in 50 years of tax payer funded research? How fast? How long does it take to drill a hole?

While you're not googling the Magma Energy Project like your life depended on it - don't do an image search for the Susio Frontier either - a Japanese liquid hydrogen tanker ship launched earlier this year. Unfortunately, the hydrogen that ship will be carrying is produced from the gasification of brown coal - which makes it incredibly inefficient relative to harnessing magma energy to produce electricity, and passing an electric current through water - to create hydrogen. But it demonstrates that bulk liquid hydrogen fuel transport is possible.

Remember the wind up radio? Awesome invention. But still, tin shack with a radio!

De-centralization of energy might provide a leap forward for the development of humanity as it could potentially help to end poverty and prevent poverty related pollution of the planet by the burning of plastic and toxic waste by 1 billion people today (the population in slums is rapidly growing).

The technology could help to unlock many new applications that haven't been imagined today.

Energy could become available where it wasn't available before.

As it is cheap to produce it could create abundance of energy.

The technology might help to solve many pollution related problems.

Never an empty battery again.

Electric vehicles with infinite range.

Major improvement of human independence in the face of nature.

Space exploration and 🛰️ satellites might benefit greatly by the technology for a more secure power source and potentially infinite distance space travel.

When it would replace batteries on a larger scale it will benefit the environment.

A 3D printer might autonomously produce the chips in space and the source material for Graphene (Graphite) is abundant on many planets including Mars. As the technology would work deep underground it could be a reliable power source that is protected from radiation and asteroid impacts. A trillion chip autonomous Graphene energy chip power plant deep under ground could provide a Terrawatt in continuous energy (based on the prototype chip). With such an unlimited power source the development and scientific research on Mars might be accelerated.

Why impose carbon taxes with one hand and give a thumbs up to fracking with the other? Why keep spending billions on fusion that has never been shown to work in 50 years of tax payer funded research? How fast? How long does it take to drill a hole?
Solar energy is advancing rapidly. Similar to PC's it becomes cheaper and more powerful each year.

"Over a decade ago, in 2009, the cost of a solar panel installation was $8.50 per watt. The solar industry today looks very different: in addition to solar panel efficiency increasing dramatically, solar panel producers have significantly improved their manufacturing processes. Solar installers, too, can deploy solar PV across the United States more efficiently now than they could ten years ago. The result: the price of solar has fallen dramatically, to just $2.77/watt.
