Hereandnow, I especially had in mind the book by Le Roy Ladurie Montaillou > The title is the name of village in Southern France near the Pyrenees. The primary source is beyond question as it is the meticulous records of a papal inquisitor for whom the detainees are interesting only as heretics, and the inquisitor is disinterested in the details of their daily lives in the village. The book reads like a novel with living characters, and yet it is fact not fiction.
