Introverted vs Extroverted Music

Post by Kane Jiang »

Ok, before you get in a rush in telling me what you think introverted and extroverted music are, this post may not be what you expect.

First off, I would like to say I am a true introvert. Not a failed extrovert introvert. A true introvert. I also have a LOT of patience.
Secondly, popular music like Ed Sheehran, Bruno Mars, Imagine Dragons, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift are missing something to my ears. They actually sound VERY "lonely" to me, especially the music video of Ed Sheehran's Perfect. When he is skiing with his girlfriend, it seems like there is no one else around like Edward Hopper's paintings. It feels like a post-apocalyptic scene to me. And the music seems to emphasize that.

These are all "extroverted" people. So how can they "sound" lonely? My thinking is a true introvert is able to create a feeling of an environment ALONE, while an extrovert isn't so looks for other people to feel less lonely. A true introvert doesn't mind being alone at all. While an extroverted person isn't USUALLY lonely because he or she is around other people so much, the act of singing is an "act" you do alone unless you are in a choir... Because of the nature of singing, solo singing by extroverts tend to sound TOO LONELY for my tastes.

Here is two examples of "introvert" music.
Search "Viking song" on youtube, then click on the video with the title "Viking song" by randomstaff100 with the picture of the blond girl. I don't usually listen to Viking music, but this music (which I don't think is sung by Valravn so I think the description is incorrect) doesn't sound LONELY at all. Even Faun sounds lonely and dreamy, so why does this Viking rendition of a song sound a little light hearted to me? There is literally no loneliness I feel when I listen to it.

Lifeforce - Further. You can search for this song on youtube. She is a true introvert I believe from the way she sings. The atmosphere from the song is breathtaking to me.

I will be hard pressed to support "extroverted" music again.

A long-haired beauty with a gun and gas mask is a representation of true introversion? Minus the sex appeal and you might be right.

?? Are you trying to be funny? That isn't her I don't think; supposedly it's from a video game.

On a serious note, don't you think pop music sounds too lonely? Why do people usually act extroverted around other people, but most music deal with themes of inclusion? And do you think introverted music wouldn't usually deal with those themes?

OK I admit that my signal is so weak that I just looed at the pictures on Google rather than listen to the music.

You make some good points and I could compare extroverted with 'exoteric around people' and compare not only music but novels with the esoteric, clues to a deeper meaning.
