Is the art of cursive writing leaving us?

Post by Philosophy Explorer »

I do cursive writing and I can read it as well as write. I heard on tv that cursive writing will be a thing of the past due to computers. Now I know we have to give our signatures to documents to show our approval. And I think there are those who enjoy writing in cursive. So do you think that cursive writing is going out of style?

Personally I love cursive, and I hate how everything is on a computer now, you are able to see peoples hand writing become worse. But sadly times change so I do think, in time it will go.

I don't think that cursive writing is leaving us. I just think it's going to be ignored. After all there are fonts for cursive writing. Sadly handwriting (or legible handwriting) has lost it's importance in society because there are now computers to write for us. Even in schools legible handwriting is no longer stressed. Which is sad because that was where it was taught. Cursive writing is no longer taught in some schools (typing has taken its place). The fate of cursive handwriting (in my opinion): taught in universities (higher education) as a form of art and left to Calligraphists. Sad isn't it. Let's hope I'm wrong. And while we're hoping, let's hope that grammar and spelling don't follow the same fate.

I think it is. There was a time when handwriting was extremely important, but now in our digital age it has become less so.

Cursive writing is leaving us. Because society will never stop changing/improving. Just like how quill pens have been replaced by pens. But you do still get those people who use quill pens, and they still sell them. It's just more of a hobby. This does not mean that cursive writing will be eradicated completely, but yes, it is definately becoming less common.

I believe that it is leaving. I hardly ever see anything written in cursive anymore - everyone has their own type of handwriting, but for the most part it is print. However, I feel that the mix of print and cursive is a quick way to jot things down. For example, when I'm in class rushing to write notes, I write in a cursive print mix because it is most efficient. I would say that cursive will still exist, but it is evolving into a more sloppy way of printing, just as signatures are quick.

Well, I write almost purely cursive, my brother and sister too, My father had been honored for his English writing. And in my area it is pretty common with those who are educated and in their 30's.

I don't get it why everyone finds it so sad. I am neutral on that point. I do hand write a lot, because I find it impractical to use a computer for taking notes in my field (mathematics) and actually there is no student at our class who takes a computer to the courses. Everything is handwritten there. I do not however find it sad that most people prefer to use computers nowadays, so if someone could explain to me why people here are so nostalgic about it, I would be grateful, because I personally do not get it.

Most things become antiquated only to resurface as something of great value, then sought after and learned for knowledge of, and the prestige of that knowledge.
Things are not always as they appear; it's a matter of perception.

It's definitely left me. As a kid I hated "penmanship" class. I'm old so we used to have this. When I started working they put a computer keyboard in front of me and I've rarely hand-written anything since. I can no longer write cursive. I block-print when I'm forced to write something by hand. I can sign my name, that's about it.

Is this a problem? I don't know how to shoe a horse either, or light a gas lamp, or till a field. But I can drive a car, program a computer, and type. What of it?

Do you speak Latin? In the past, no person could call himself educated if he didn't speak Latin.

On this, I realised how much I contradict myself.

I look (or try to look) at everything at a very basic standard. Ie: Food= food, it is sustenance. Eat it, it lets you live.

So I would like to reposition myself on this topic-

If it allows us to communicate, it is good and thus does its job, allows humans to communicate.
